Former 500cc Grand Prix World Champion Kevin Schwantz announced on an Internet radio show that the Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School is moving from Road Atlanta to Barber Motorsports Park and that he will also run schools featuring a mixture of Suzukis and Hondas, under the Kevin Schwantz Super School banner. Schwantz started a Tuesday-evening interview on Pit Pass Radio by stating, “The Kevin Schwantz Suzuki School is moving from Road Atlanta to Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama.” Schwantz later cited the racetrack facility and museum as key factors in the decision. Recent program cutbacks made by American Suzuki Motor Corporation may have contributed to the decision. In the interview, Schwantz cited the need for motorcycle manufacturers to support non-exclusive schools, pointing out the added expense created by each manufacturer supporting its own brand-exclusive school or schools. Schwantz’s program at Barber may have scooped up Honda support thought to be originally headed for a school at Miller Motorsports Park designed to replace the now defunct school owned by former 500cc and 250cc Grand Prix World Champion Freddie Spencer and operated at both Miller Motorsports Park and at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Miller Motorsports Park was notified last week that Honda was pulling its sponsorship of the track as well as support for the motorcycle school program and sponsorship of race events at the Utah facility. Schwantz could not be reached for comment at post time. A Miller Motorsports Park spokesperson could not be reached for comment at post time. Listen to the radio show containing the interview here. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
