Taylor Knapp and Charlie Coleman each took two pole positions in Friday qualifying for Sunday’s WERA National Challenge Series races at Nelson Ledges Road Course in Garrettsville, Ohio. Knapp’s pole time for 600cc Superstock was a 1:09.159 and his pole time for Open Superstock was 1:07.407. Coleman qualified fastest in F1 at 1:07.710 and took pole in 750cc Supersport at 1:07.814. Usual front-runner Robert Jensen said he would boycott the event because the track was unsafe at what he predicted would be the pace on Sunday, in the 1:05-1:04 range. “The track is not safe to do those times,” Jensen said, adding that the relatively close proximity of tire walls and the bumpy surface were problems. Once Jensen–who raced in a recent regional contingency paying event at Nelson Ledges–had convinced Vesrah Suzuki’s Tray Batey and Lee Acree to also not compete, he packed up and left the track. Vesrah Suzuki owner Mark Junge said that he personally wanted to ride, but that he supported his riders in their decision. “The whole thing is a pile,” said Junge. “The first thing they need to do is move the walls back, and then repave. As it is, the track surface is no worse than IRP was. But if they repave it without moving the walls back first, the place will be crazy fast and it will be worse.” WERA officials declined to comment on the situation.
