KYLE OHNSORG WRAPS UP CRA CHAMPIONSHIP ONE ROUND EARLY
Brainerd, MN – In a move to keep the general public on their toes, the Central Roadracing Association (CRA) held the “August” race weekend on September 1-2 at Brainerd International Raceway’s Competition Course. Okay, so technically the weekend started in August with Friday practice occurring on August 31, but that’s some fuzzy math if you ask me. While the August weekend happening in September was a bit of a surprise, Kyle Ohnsorg wrapping up his second overall championship was as shocking as being told that circles are indeed round.
After a dominating weekend during the July round, Ohnsorg continued his run at the front of every race he entered but as he suffered a few DNS and DNF’s, he didn’t take home first in every race he entered. Poor guy. We’re all hoping his luck will finally turn around and he can finish the season on a high note during the September weekend. This press release isn’t going to be an Ohnsorg lovefest but it has to be said that he was 1/3 of one of the most amazing Unlimited races we’ve seen in some time.
Jesse Nelson had been struggling with fueling issues on his stunning Yamaha R1 all season as it was drinking like a college frat boy which caused it to stutter a lot and run really weird. Prior to the “August” round, he had some massive work done to the electronics package which addressed most of its issues and he was finally able to run the pace he’d been expecting to all season. Jake Schmotter, ever the opportunist, slyly borrowed the fuel map that Jesse and Jason Farrell spent hours working on and Schmotter used it to great effect. During Sunday’s Unlimited Superbike race, Schmotter, Scott Stall and Kyle Ohnsorg ran nose-to-tail for the entire race distance with no clear favorite for the win. When they started the last lap, Stall led Ohnsorg and Schmotter but Ohnsorg’s race almost ended when his Husman Race Engineering BMW S1000RR started pondering what life would be like without Kyle on it. Somehow Kyle saved the highside (realistically, he accidentally landed back in the seat and kept going) but the incident made chances of victory almost impossible. Or so we thought. Somehow, Ohnsorg collected himself and put the hammer down, emerging from Turn 3 leading Stall with Schmotter still a close third. Coming out of the “Joker,” Stall’s challenge for the win was over but excessive throttle application, and the resultant wicked-cool wheelie, hurt his drive out of the first gear corner enough for Schmotter to slot into second place. All three riders served as stars of the show and that race will undoubtedly go down as one of the best of the season.
In the Middleweight/Heavyweight classes, Jes Schwartz continued his upward trajectory in the Expert field, notching up his first Expert race win on his Sand Law Motorcycle Lawyers Yamaha R6. The Novice ranks saw some fantastic rides by Mike Scherlin, who put on a clinic of daring moves into the notoriously difficult turn 12 throughout the weekend, and Zack Abraham as both riders went home with a victory to their names.
In the 90s cup, a class that has been the surprise of the season, Leif Nadeau had the field covered on his vintage Yamaha R6 but Adam Harrison, James Michaelson, Chris Mattson and Adam Knauer put on great battles all weekend long.
The Lightweight class served up some great battles and while finishing races at all was a great relief to Harry Jensen, finishing in first multiple times only sweetened his weekend. The best performance in Lightweight unquestionably went to Jack Barton, who used his Ultralight-spec Kramer HKR Evo 2 to beat Jon Champ and the rest of a very talented Lightweight field to the overall race win in Saturday’s combined Ultralight/Lightweight Supersport race.
The award for Ultralight rider of the weekend was given to Stephen Peterson in a private ceremony at an undisclosed location on Sunday evening that was kept so secret that not even Stephen was aware of it. The details of the ceremony, if it even happened, will remain locked away in the minds of the few souls in attendance but still, congrats on a job well done, Stephen. We will be sending you the bill for the catering at the ceremony in the near future.
The Featherweight races were home to the usual closely fought battles as Expert class debutant Kurt Ohnsorg tried his best to knock his brother Kyle off of the top step of the podium. He ultimately failed but he was able to at least keep Kyle honest throughout the race. The Novice Featherweight class had standout performances from Brady Fors who grabbed onto the opportunity to ride the Fisk Brothers Racing Yamaha R3 with both hands to finish second multiple times and Bill Nystrom as he steadily continues his march toward the front of the class.
The final CRA round will take place September 21-23 on Brainerd International Raceway’s notorious Donnybrooke configuration with sprint races being held on Saturday and the annual 5-Hour endurance race on Sunday.
