LACOMBE REPEATS AT AMP SHUBENACADIE, NS Kevin Lacombe of Granby, QC won the Parts Canada Superbike Championship feature at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Saturday. It was his second straight victory on the challenging 2.56km (1.6-mile) race track. After a red flag halted action in the original race after 12 of a scheduled 22 laps had been completed, Lacombe took the lead off the restart and led all eight laps on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000. Pascal Picotte, also from Granby, placed second aboard the Picotte Performance Yamaha YZF-R1, just 0.431 secs. behind Lacombe and series points leader Francis Martin of Rock Forest, QC was third riding the Snobgirls / Laval Moto Suzuki GSX-R1000. Saturday’s race was the first half of a doubleheader at AMP. A second 22-lap race is slated for Sunday afternoon. “I got a good start and that was important,” said Lacombe. “I knew it would be hard for anybody to pass me so I got good drive out of every corner and braked late into the corners.” Picotte’s runner-up finish was worth 42 points and moved him up to second place in the Parts Canada Superbike standings with 225 points, just 15 behind Martin at 240. Jordan Szoke and Clint McBain, who came into racing this weekend second and third in the standings, respectively, are now tied for third in the championship with 223 points each. McBain was fifth in Saturday’s race on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot Suzuki GSX-R1000 after passing Szoke’s Fast Company Honda CBR1000RR on the final lap. Sunday’s race is the penultimate round in the eight-race series. Martin led all 12 laps of the first part of the Superbike race before action was stopped for a crash involving Mississauga, ON rider Matt McBride. Although McBride did not appear to be seriously injured immediately after the incident, he was transported to hospital in Halifax for further evaluation. Lacombe got the edge on the restart and held off a three-rider pack consisting of Steve Crevier on the Diablo Performance Honda CBR1000RR, Picotte and Martin. Crevier held second until the start of the final lap, when he ran wide in turn 2 and allowed Picotte and Martin to nip by. The Maple Ridge, BC rider settled for fourth at the finish. In other action at AMP, Crevier extended his lead in the Hindle Exhaust Pro 600 Sport Bike standings by claiming his fourth win in six races this year. Crevier took his Honda CBR600RR to a narrow 1.253-sec. victory over the Topline Yamaha YZF-R6 of Calgary’s Chris Peris. Tom Kipp of Chardon, OH was third on the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-6RR. Mark Douglas of Warkworth, ON extended his lead in the International Motorcycle SUPERSHOW Amateur 600 Sport Bike standings by taking pole for Sunday’s race with a time of 1:13.219 on his Yamaha YZF-R6. Points leader Bill Card of Wellesley, ON held off fellow Buell rider Darren James of North Vancouver to win the eight-lap qualifying heat for the Canadian Thunder series. Karl Daigle of Roxton Pond, QC took the Suzuki SV650 National Cup pole at 1:16.343. Action from this weekend will be televised later this summer in a one-hour show on TSN.
