Kane Lasky, Ivan Garza and Roger Heemsbergen each took home wins in ASMA racing at Arroyo Seco Raceway this Sunday in some of the most competitive racing ever held at the facility. In the first race of the day, Garza and Lasky led the field into turn 1 while Heemsbergen, riding a borrowed 2007 GSXR1000 from BSR’s Pat Bushell, took over 3rd halfway through the first lap after starting on row 5. All three racers were under the previous lap record for the clockwise direction of 1:08.60 set by Garza in March of this season. On lap 4 Garza, on Dunlop slicks, set a new lap record of 1:07.77 on his way to the top spot of the podium. The race was a procession for the top 3 spots until the final lap when Heemsbergen took advantage of a rare mistake by Lasky to take 2nd, with Lasky bringing it home in 3rd. In Formula Arroyo, the top class in the series, Garza took the holeshot followed by Ray Thorton and Heemsbergen. On lap 2 Heemsbergen almost highsided exiting the Carousel and Lasky took over the 3rd spot. A lap later, Lasky and Heemsbergen both got by Thorton and started working to close the gap to Garza, with Lasky turning the fastest laps of the race, 1:07.48 and 1:07.50 on laps 3 and 4 for a new lap record. An uncharacteristic mistake by Garza with 5 laps to go allowed Lasky to take the lead and take home his first win of 2007. Lasky used Pirelli medium compound slicks to take the win and set the new lap record. Garza finished 2nd, with Heemsbergen 3rd and Mike Shreve the first 600 to the line in 4th place after a race long battle with Thorton. The final race of the day, Unlimited Superbike, saw Ray Thorton take the lead, but Garza had the lead before the end of lap 1. On lap 2 Heemsbergen was into 2nd and set out after the leader. This race looked to be another procession but once again Garza made another mistake, running wide in the final turn and allowing Heemsbergen to take the lead and eventual win, followed by Garza and Thorton. It was a great weekend of racing after the summer break at Arroyo Seco, with 4 riders under the old lap record. Other big winners were Mike Shreve winning Middleweight SuperStock, Middleweight Superbike, and Heavyweight Superbike on his Yamaha R6, as well as Tiras Banks continued domination of the Amateur ranks on his GSXR1000.
