By John Ulrich Virginia International Raceway has filed a lawsuit against Daytona Motorsports Group (DMG), doing business as AMA Pro Racing, related to the Alton, Virginia racetrack’s cancellation of an AMA Pro Superbike National scheduled for this coming August 12-14. A news report detailing the filing is here: ~http://www.gazettevirginian.com/index.php/news/34-news/3536-vir-files-lawsuit-over-contract~ According to the news report, the suit was filed July 5th, before the dispute became public and before VIR issued a statement that read, “No AMA Pro Racing event will take place at VIR in 2011. If circumstances are conducive in 2012, VIR looks forward to renewing its relationship with AMA Pro Racing.” Yet the report also states that the suit seeks a declaratory judgment freeing VIR of any obligation to not only conduct an AMA Pro event in August 2011, but also in August 2012. Documents related to the dispute between VIR and AMA Pro Racing filed in support of the suit or found during the discovery process may become part of the public record and reveal exactly what happened and why, as well as who is closest to telling the truth in the conflict. VIR principal Connie Nyholm has not returned phone calls and e-mails from Roadracing World seeking comment on the dispute. Affected riders, race teams and sponsors may have grounds for their own litigation, according to lawyers involved in racing. Stay tuned.
