LocoMotion Back on Top at MotorSport Ranch with CMRA

The LocoMotion team of Brandon Altmeyer, Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, Hayden Schultz, and Mark Windham swept the endurance podiums with both the overall CMRA Championship Endurance win and the win in Promomin Oil/Repsol – Superbike Endurance with their Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 this past Saturday, August 19, 2017.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) held its fourth round of Championship Endurance, seventh round of Lightweight Sprints, and third round of Solo 30 Sprints, bringing over 10 hours of racing action to MotorSport Ranch in Cresson, Texas. Clear sunny skies and humid temperatures in the high 90’s with a heat heat index of 110 made for challenging riding conditions on the 1.7-mile clockwise course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with up to 35 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the lightweight sprints. The Solo 30 Heavyweight/Middleweight Expert and Island Racing Services Novice races, followed by the Solo 30 Lightweight/Ultra-Lightweight Expert and Island Racing Services Novice races that rounded out the morning also had large grids of 28 and 23 bikes respectively.

Cory Burleson rode his MotoBros-prepped, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to both the overall and Solo 30 Middleweight Expert wins, turning a blazing 1:16.350 fastest lap on lap two of Solo 30 Heavyweight race, and was the overall fastest lap of the day.

Cooper McDonald took a Yamaha FZ-07R to the overall and Solo 30 Lightweight Expert wins, turning an impressive 1:21.026 fastest lap in the Solo 30 Lightweight race.

The weather was hot and humid for the 6-Hour Championship Endurance race with a combined grid of 15 teams taking the field, representing Promomin Oil/Repsol- Superbike, Superstock, Antic Screen Printing – Formula 2, and Modern Classic Endurance classes.

The grid lined up, the lights went out, and it was on. The Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Village Idiots got a firm grip on the lead during the first hour turning a screaming hot 1:17.988 fastest lap on Lap 31 with the Pretty Hate Machine team of Jesse Davis, Andy Galindo, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede stalking them aboard their Yamaha YZF-R1. Right behind them, LocoMotion wrestled with Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted Just Can’t Quit Racing, as Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Buffington Homes Racing and The Skidmarks vied for fifth headed into Hour 2.

Pretty Hate Machine was giving the race leading Village Idiots no quarter, as they rode a mere 4.7 seconds behind in second, with LocoMotion gaining an upper hand on the Just Can’t Quit Racing team of JC Camacho, Dewayne Davis, Pete Martins, and Dustin Meador, who turned the fastest lap of the entire race, throwing down a blazing 17.770 on Lap 35. The Suzuki SV650 mounted Torquasaurus team of Dave Gallagher, Ben Gooding, Josh Henke, and Chris Woolsey bested the Buffington Homes Racing team of Chris Fields and Kenny Smith to pull into fifth as they were going into Hour 3.

The lap times continued to drop despite the heat as the race wore on. As the Village Idiots stretched their lead to 32.276 seconds, LocoMotion got the jump on Pretty Hate Machine to take over second, while Buffington Homes Racing put the smack down on Torquasaurus and The Skidmarks team of Hector Barreto, Enoc Garza, Steven Nedd, and Brian Prescott to jump up into fifth behind Just Can’t Quit Racing. During Hour 4, as the field continued to chase each other down, the Village Idiots caught a pavement seam and lowsided, with LocoMotion taking over the lead, Pretty Hate Machine holding down second, and Just Can’t Quit Racing in third. Torquasaurus on the little SV650 that could once again snuck past Buffington Homes Racing for fourth, with The Skidmarks rounding out the top six.

Hour 5 was grueling, with the radiant heat off the pavement at 150 degrees, and the sun beating down on the racers. LocoMotion held steady, turning solid 1:18 second laps, stretching their lead to 1 lap over the field, as Pretty Hate Machine hunted them down. Just Can’t Quit was solidly in third, with Torquasaurus playing king of the mountain with Buffington Homes Racing and The Skidmarks. The Village Idiots got their bike back together and got on it, clawing their way back up to eighth place as Hour 6 approached.

During the final hour, the race leaders continued to charge as Pretty Hate Machine had closed the gap on LocoMotion to 58 seconds, with both teams having one pit stop left to do. Just Can’t Quit Racing and Torquasaurus were good for third and fourth, The Skidmarks held fifth, while the Village Idiots climbed up into sixth. As the clock wound down, LocoMotion and Pretty Hate Machine did their final pit stops, and LocoMotion got away a little better than Pretty Hate Machine. However, Pretty Hate Machine was within striking distance, as their last rider Alan Phillips put his head down and went for broke, riding it like a sprint race and turning a lightning fast 1:17.883 lap on Lap 261, but LocoMotion escaped, crossing the line for the win just 13.254 ahead of the field.

The LocoMotion team took the Overall Championship Endurance and Promomin/Repsol Oils – Superbike Endurance wins, followed by Pretty Hate Machine with second overall and second in Promomin/Repsol Oils – Superbike Endurance. Just Can’t Quit Racing got third overall and third in Promomin/Repsol Oils – Superbike Endurance. Torquasaurus was next, finishing fourth overall and taking the win in Antic Screen Printing – Formula 2 Endurance with The Skidmarks finishing fifth overall and fourth in Promomin/Repsol Oils – Superbike Endurance. The Village Idiots were right behind, with sixth overall and fifth in Promomin/Repsol Oils – Superbike Endurance.
