Defending WSMC overall champion Karl Lowry made it three for three in 2008, again taking a decisive win in the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula One race at the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club’s (WSMC) March 16 race event. In blustery, chilly conditions, Lowry led each of the 12 laps as he took his Graves Motorsports, North County House of Motorcycles-sponsored, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1 to a 3.452-second win over Michael Beck. “I ran off a string of 1:22.1 laps, and the gap (to second) stayed the same,” Lowry said in the post-race interview. I was thinking, ‘Wow, who’s back there? They’re riding pretty good.’ But it was good, it kept me focused.” Beck was indeed riding well, especially considering he turned the fastest lap of the race (1:21.938) while on his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6 Supersport bike, which wore Dunlop DOT-labeled tires. “I just tried to be consistent and hit my markers,” Beck said. “I gave it everything I had.” Third in the Formula One race went to Fastline/MCM Racing’s Jeff Stern, after an intense battle with newcomer Ben Fansler. In addition to the Formula One race, Lowry also won in Open Superstock and Open Superbike and took second 600cc Superstock and third in 650cc Superbike. Beck, meanwhile, won all three middleweight races: 600cc Superstock, 600cc Modified Production and 650cc Superbike. Wesley Totsubo won the club’s first Ninja Cup race for Ninja 250s.
