Karl Lowry continued his winning streak at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, dominating qualifying and taking a hard-earned victory in the featured SoCal Track Days Unlimited Shootout at the May Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association races. The weekend was marred by the weather, which forced organizers to cancel most of the sprint races on Sunday (CVMA races on Saturday and Sunday). High winds blew sheets of sand across the pavement, making traction unpredictable and reducing visibility to near-nothing. Riders complained that the blowing dust hung in a visibility-destroying cloud behind their windscreens; Young Gun Lex Hartl said, “I got dirt in my retainer!” On his Graves Motorsports-backed, Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R1, Lowry showed speed out of the box, turning a shining 1:48.802 lap to lead qualifying. In the Formula Open race, Lowry jumped out in front and turned a 1:49.934 lap en route to the win over Hartl and his Dunlop-shod YZF-R6. Hartl and James Randolph on his KTM RC8R diced until Randolph who was making his first appearance at CVMA ran off the track, leaving the runner-up spot to Hartl, with Aaron Ascher winner of the SuperSport Open race in third aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R. In Formula Middleweight, Lowry took the win again, this time on his YZF-R6, while Hartl ran an amazing 1:49.116, the quickest lap on a 600cc machine in CVMA competition to date. Ryan Matter and his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R600 took third. In SuperSport Middleweight competition, Hartl and Matter led Dale Kieffer and his Michelin-shod, Racers Edge Performance-backed Yamaha YZF-R6 over the line. On Sunday, only the SoCal Track Days Unlimited Shootout and the Lightweight Shootout ran before the event was called off. In the Unlimited Shootout, Lowry led Randolph and Hartl to the checkered flag. In the Lightweight Shootout, Andrew Zabzdyr aboard his SuperSport-spec, Pirelli-shod, West Coast GP Cycles-backed Suzuki SV650 took the win over Ryan Gagliano on a Cyclemall-backed, Bridgestone-shod Kawasaki 650R and Dustin Coyner on a Pirelli-shod, West Coast GP Cycles-backed Suzuki SV650.
