Lowry Starts Title Defense Strong, Winning Toyota Cup Formula One Race At Willow Springs

Karl Lowry, winner of the 2007 Overall Willow Springs Motorcycle Club Championship, started 2008 strong, winning the Toyota Cup Unlimited Formula 1 race in dominant fashion and taking two other wins this weekend.

Lowry took his Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R1 to the front at the start and was never headed, pulling to a 10.265-second win over Jeff Stern, runner-up in the 2007 WSMC Overall Championship. Stern, on his Dunlop-shod, Simi Valley Cycles-sponsored GSX-R1000, held second the length of the 12-lap race.

Robbie Dowie held third for the first half of the race. But AMA Superbike series guns Michael Beck and Josh Hayes were taking advantage of the clear, sunny but breezy Southern California weather to get in some track time on a pair of 600s during January.

Once they got hooked up, they ran down Dowie and demoted him to fifth. Hayes on his almost stock CBR600RR just edged Dowie, but Beck took his Graves Motorsports YZF-R6 to a clean third, putting in an impressive performance against a field of mostly liter bikes.

Lowry also took the Open Superstock and Open Superbike wins, and took a pair of thirds in 600cc Superstock and 650cc Superbike aboard his new Graves Motorsports Yamaha YZF-R6.

Beck made a clean sweep of the Middleweight classes, winning the 600cc Superstock and Modified Production races as well as the 650cc Superbike race.
