Lowry Wins WSMC Formula One Race On Yamaha YZF-R6

With his Yamaha YZF-R6 running hard in recent months, Karl Lowry left his Yamaha YZF-R1 in the pits when it came time to grid up for the Toyota Gold Cup Unlimited Formula One race at Willow Springs.

And Lowry and the little Yamaha simply left the field for dead, winning the 12-lap, 30-mile race by nearly the length of Willow’s long front straight.

Lowry took the Graves Motorsports-backed, Dunlop-shod YZF-R6 to the win in spite of a stiff breeze slicing across the track, while cutting a best lap time of 1:21.568, more than a second quicker than anyone else on their full literbikes.

More than 11 seconds after Lowry crossed the line, Chris Duran finished second on his Dunlop-shod, AIP Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 and Brant Wiwi took third on his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000 in the seven-bike field.

Lowry also set a new record in the 600cc Modified Production race with a 1:21.617 lap in the first race of the day, as well as winning 600 Superstock and Open Superbike. Wiwi won Open Superstock, while Duran won the 750cc Superstock race.
