LRRS: Doucette Captures #1 Plate

LRRS: Doucette Captures #1 Plate

© 2020, Roadracing World Publishing, Inc. From a press release issued By LRRS:

Father & Son Capture Series Championships

Rick Doucette has been racing the Loudon Road Race Series for  30 seasons, and is the winningest rider in the history of the series.  At the final round of the 2020 LRRS championship he added to his impressive list of accomplishments as he secured the 2020 Overall #1 plate with podium finishes in over 10 classes while riding three different motorcycles.  Doucette has long been known for his ability to ride a variety of motorcycles, and this season he campaigned on three different Yamahas (R6, a 565cc “R5” and and R3) as well as on a Suzuki SV650.  A mid-season update to the tuning of both his R6 and R5 helped him with concerted push to the front this season, particularly to the R5 that is campaigned in the highly competitive LRRS Expert Lightweight Classes.  Doucette was able to cement his 3rd consecutive overall #1 plate with wins over longtime rival Jesse Sandoz in the GTL, LWGP and Formula 40 Lights classes.

The battle for the prestigious Vanson Leathers Rookie of the Year award was the most hotly contested it has been in years.  This award is given to a rider starts the season as a Novice and the advances the furthest during the course of the season.  If multiple riders advance from Novice to Amateur and then to Expert status, then the rider who accumulates the most Expert points is declared the winner.  For the first time in many years three riders (Renee Franco, Jacob Crossman and Lukas Doucette) made the leap from Novice to Expert.  Franco had advanced one weekend prior to the season finale and as such had a leg up on her two competitors, but with double points being awarded for the last race of the season the race was wide open.

All three of three young riders (Franco is 16, Crossman is 15 and Doucette is 17) sought to take advantage of the double points and entered some extra classes to improve their chances of winning the award (and the custom Vanson suit that comes with it).  Multiple strategies were employed to look for opportunities to gather the most points possible, but the most interesting stories came from the races in which the three young competitors all raced head-to-head on their Ninja 400’s.  Race 1,Race 2.  In the final head-to-head race of the weekend Doucette has something to prove.  He had entered more classes than his two rivals and as a result had taken solid lead in the ROY competition.  In order to feel like a really earned the award, Doucette felt like he needed to dig deep and beat Crossman and Franco straight up.  When the green flag dropped, Franco got a poor start and would spend the duration of the race working to catch her two fellow competitors – making ground but never getting within striking distance.  Up front it was shaping up to be an epic battle. After trading spots several times during the event as the pair of riders dealt with traffic, Doucette used a fine bit of race craft to make a pass on Crossman on the last lap and beat him for the first time all weekend.  The feeling of accomplishment was palpable as he celebrated with his father Rick and mother Noelle on pit lane.  All three of these racers have bright futures in our sport, and we’re sure that this will not be the last time we’ll see them squaring off for a championship!

There were several other notable performances from Expert riders over the weekend.  Scott Greenwood won 7 races on the way to winning 7 championships on his Argo Cycles Yamaha R6, but two of those wins were extremely close.  Greenwood missed a race mid season and as a result had won by virtue of a tiebreaker against both Tyler Wasserbauer in the Middleweight Superbike class.  Eric Wood won 4 races on his way to winning 4 championships on his Woodcraft/Penguin Racing Kawasaki ZX10 – a bike which was sold before the event thereby opening the possibility of Wood moving out of the Unlimited classes for 2021.  Jesse Sandoz won 3 races and captured 6 championships on his Seacoast Sport Cycles Ducati Monster 1100, and Elijah Block won 4 races as he won 4 championships on his Manchester Honda/KTM sponsored Husqvarna 450 and Kawasaki Ninja 400’s.

In the Amateur ranks the championships were spread among several riders – most of whom will move on to the Expert class in 2021.  This will leave the Amateur class championships open to a whole new group of riders as we enter next season.  The top performing Amateur racer of 2020 was Drew Bailey who captured an impressive 5 Amateur titles on his Seacoast Sport Cycles Suzuki SV650.  Other notable performances came from Brian Wardius on his AK Racefab Yamaha R6 (3 championships), Lincoln Gottier on his Yamaha R6 (3 championships), Thomas Sands on his KTM 390 (3 championships) and Tom Law on his Motorsports Nation Husqvarna 450.

The Loudon Road Race Series will be releasing a 2021 schedule in the coming months.  The series is looking forward to continuing to build on the success of 2020 and to introduce some new classes geared towards track day level riders.  Riders can expect a continued partnership with CCS and the opportunity to have at least one LRRS series “away” event in conjunction with a CCS date at a different facility.
