Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May was not only the fastest rider overall at the two-day Pirelli tire test, which concluded under cold and windy conditions Friday at Daytona International Speedway, but he was the fastest man in two categories, Superstock and Supersport. “I think things went excellent, especially considering the conditions were less than ideal,” said May, who was fastest overall with a 1:40.133 on his 2006-model GSX-R1000 and fastest in Supersport with a 1:43.345 on his 2006-model GSX-R600. “With the cold and the wind on top of it, it was pretty miserable out there, but if you want to win here in the spring you have to do your homework now. I think we came up with some good information that will help Pirelli build us some good tires. “And I was happy to go as fast as I did because everything [rear tires] I rode on was single-compound, and everything I rode on was hard. So to go that fast, I think, is a really good sign of what we’re in for when we come back here in March.” Second-fastest overall was Fast By Ferracci MV Agusta’s Matt Lynn, who turned a 1:42.399 on his very stock F4-1000R in spite of being weakened by flu symptoms. Just behind May in the Supersport class times was Ben Attard, who turned a 1:43.488 on his 2006 Attack Kawasaki ZX-6RR Supersport bike. Attard told Roadracingworld.com that his time was his personal best on a 600cc machine at Daytona in spite of it being his second day ever on Pirelli rubber. A few tenths behind Attard was his new teammate Steve Rapp (1:43.754), who spent Friday lapping on a 2007-model ZX-6R which had been fitted with a Supersport-spec engine and Formula Xtreme chassis components. The high temperature Friday reached 55 degrees F, but strong winds out of the north made it feel much colder and affected riders at speed on the 2.95-mile infield road course. Originally, Tony Meiring was listed as having done a 1:44.677 on a Moto Uno Racing Kawasaki ZX-6RR Supersport bike. When questioned about the lap time, Meiring claimed that it was a legitimate lap. Upon further review of the individual lap times and segment times for each rider, it was determined that in spite of what Meiring said he did cut the course in the infield section of the track. His next-fastest time of the test was a 1:46.605.
