Team M4 EMGO Suzuki’s Geoff May led AMA Superstock practice Wednesday morning at Daytona International Speedway. Riding a 2007 GSX-R1000 on Pirelli tires, May turned a 1:40.131, which is about one second slower than last year’s fastest Superstock qualifying time. Defending AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies was second-quickest in the session on his Dunlop-shod Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000. Spies was wearing a brand new set of Alpinestars leathers during practice. Aaron Yates was third-fastest on his Jordan Suzuki, with Roadracingworld.com Suzuki’s Chris Ulrich fourth-fastest and Jordan Suzuki’s Jake Holden fifth-fastest. Sixth in the practice was Martin Cardenas on his Motul-sponsored Kawasaki ZX-10R. Cardenas is Colombian and a former factory rider in the 250cc GP World Championship. Seventh on the Superstock time sheet was Graves Motorsports Yamaha’s Ben Bostrom, who is riding with a torn tendon and bone spurs in his left shoulder. The month-old injury needs surgery, but Bostrom has opted to ride through the painful injury this season and get surgery at the end of the year. Superstock practice was cut short by several minutes. About halfway through the session Matsushima Performance Suzuki’s Danny Eslick suffered an apparent mechanical failure with his GSX-R1000 that put oil down in the infield. Eslick’s teammate Blake Young also suffered a mechanical problem with his new GSX-R1000. The practice was stopped a second time, about one minute short of the checkered flag for an unknown incident.
