Geoff May and Robert Jensen each took a CCS race win Saturday at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) near Danville, Virginia.
May came from row five of the grid to win the seven-lap Middleweight Supersport race on his Pirelli-shod Team M4 EMGO Suzuki GSX-R600 over Arclight Suzuki’s Jeff Wood. As May moved into second on lap three, then-leader Wood suffered a spectacular near-crash, falling off the side of the bike and running over his own foot, allowing May to pass easily. Wood recovered to finish second, ahead of Champions Martin Moto’s Michael Himmelsbach, who rode a Yamaha.
“Great, definitely not a factor,” said May, when asked how his shoulder (injured in a post-race celebration at Road America) did during the race. “The only time it was a factor was when I yanked that wheelie up on the last lap. (laughs) It’s hard to get the 600 up. I haven’t had to adjust my riding style or anything else to compensate. It’s definitely not going to be an issue for the rest of the season.”
Wood’s bad luck continued in Heavyweight Supersport. As he led lap three of a four-lap restart, Kneedraggers.com’s Jensen challenged Wood on the brakes going into turn one. Jensen got in too hot and pushed wide. Wood, who was on the outside, was forced out into the grass. Jensen, who rode a Michelin-equipped Suzuki GSX-R750, went on to win the race by a large margin over May, who rode his GSX-R600 with the same set of Pirellis he used in the earlier race. Wood salvaged a third-place finish.
