MCBAIN SCORES BIG WIN AT AMP SHUBENACADIE, N.S. (August 10) Clint McBain kept his Parts Canada Superbike Championship title hopes alive with a dominant victory in the penultimate round of the series at Atlantic Motorsport Park on Sunday. The Cochrane, Alta. rider grabbed the lead off the start on his Acceleration Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 and stayed in front for all 22 laps, finally finishing 6.201 seconds ahead of the Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R of Brett McCormick. “We made a change just before the start of the race and went with a harder front tire,” McBain said after his third victory of the season. “That allowed me to use the front a little bit more and conserve the rear.” Series leader Jordan Szoke of Brantford, Ont. placed third on the other Canadian Kawasaki Motors Kawasaki ZX-10R and takes a 42-point lead over McBain to the final round at Shannonville Motorsport Park Aug. 29-31. “I’m getting closer. All I can do at Shannonville is what I did today,” said McBain, who has 245 points to the 287 of Szoke, with 56 points available at the final round. “Jordan’s a smart guy and he has a lot of experience. But racing is racing and there are a lot of other good guys out there.” After starting from pole position the 16-year-old McCormick held second spot all the way to equal his best career finish. The Saskatoon rider was nursing rib injuries sustained at the previous round at Mosport International Raceway. “We made a change to the bike this morning and it was really comfortable for me,” McCormick said. “But I wish I was healthier. About 10 laps in I could feel the pain in every transition.” After winning Saturday’s opening race in the doubleheader weekend at AMP, Szoke ran a lonely third on Sunday and crossed the line just over 10 seconds behind McBain. “I was out there running for the championship,” said Szoke, who was trying to lock up his third straight Parts Canada Superbike title and fifth overall. “I just didn’t want to do anything stupid. I never actually planned to be on the podium today.” Szoke’s Saturday win was his 26th career national Superbike triumph, putting him in a tie with Steve Crevier for the most all-time national wins. Chris Peris claimed fourth on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing Suzuki GSX-R750. The Calgary rider spent most of the race embroiled in a battle with his teammate Francis Martin and Steve Crevier on the Deeley Harley-Davidson Canada / Ruthless Racing Buell 1125R, but Crevier and Martin crashed out in the Carousel just three laps from the end. Matt McBride finished fifth on his Team Suzuki / Blackfoot / Picotte Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000, just ahead of rookie Brian Blaauwendraat of Truro, N.S. aboard the T.R. Petroleum Enterprises / Lougheed’s Heating Oils Honda CBR600RR. After breaking his wrist in a fall on Saturday, Granby, Que.’s Kevin Lacombe rode bravely to seventh on his Team Toyota Yamaha / Fast Company Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 and held onto third in the championship with 205 points. Ross Millson of Hamilton, Ont. (RMP Motorsport Suzuki GSX-R1000), Stillwater Lake, N.S.’s Bill Clark (Sackville Motorsports Kawasaki ZX-10R) and Truro, N.S. rider Andrew Dunlap (Fundy Power Sports Kawasaki ZX-10R) completed the top 10. In other action at AMP, Szoke locked up the Yoshimura Pro 600 Sport Bike title with a third place finish in Sunday’s race on his Kawasaki ZX-6R. Peris claimed the win on a Suzuki GSX-R600 after Saturday’s race winner Andrew Nelson (Nelson Racing Yamaha YZF-R6) crashed out of the lead on lap 12 of the 18-lap race. “To defend any championship is pretty cool,” said Szoke after clinching his third straight Pro 600 crown. “This takes a lot of pressure off us and we can go to the last round and hang it out a little.” McCormick was second in the race on another Kawasaki ZX-6R, 7.482 secs. behind Peris. Nelson rebounded to win the Canadian Thunder race on his NCR-Ducati 848 and keep the championship alive heading to the final round at Shannonville. The Kars, Ont. rider finished 5.472 secs. ahead of teammate Valter Bartolini, with Erick Beausejour of Val D’Or, Que. third on a KTM Canada KTM Super Duke R 990. Bartolini, from Bologna, Italy, now has 256 points to the 209 of Nelson. Jim Proulx of Ottawa wrapped up the Canadian Sport Twins title after a second place finish in the race on his Buell XB12R. Surrey, B.C.’s Olivier Spilborghs won on Sunday aboard a Buell XB9R. Keene, Ont.’s Jodi Christie won his third Armour Bodies Amateur 600 Sport Bike race of the year on his Yamaha YZF-R6 but a second place finish by Calgary’s Patrick Marques on his Suzuki GSX-R600 kept the title race alive. Christie takes a 43-point lead over Marques, 250-207, heading to the Shannonville finale. Martin Grande placed third on a Suzuki GSX-R600. The Montreal rider actually crossed the line in second but was penalized five seconds for a jump start. Cody Matechuk of Cochrane, Alta. closed to within two points of the lead in the Suzuki SV650 National Cup with his second win of the weekend. The 15-year-old finished 14.282 secs. ahead of series leader John Jarvie of Burlington, Ont. Jarvie heads to Shannonville with 281 points to the 279 of Matechuk. Raphael Archambault of St-Colomban, QC clinched the Honda CBR125R Challenge title with his fourth win in four races this season. This weekend’s races will be shown on TSN-HD and TSN later this fall in two separate one-hour programs. The first will premier on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 1:00 p.m. and repeat on Friday, Oct. 10 at 4:00 a.m. The second will premier on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m. and repeat on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 4:30 a.m. All times are Eastern.
