McDonough and Pinkstaff Split Formula Ultra Wins During OMRRA’s 2016 Season Opener
Portland International Raceway and ideal weather with the promise of an early summer welcomed a full paddock of racers chomping at the bit to the contest the 2016 OMRRA season. OMRRA started the weekend by producing a couple dozen new racers having gone through the rigors of the New Racer School. From the moment the first green flag dropped, battles raged from vintage machines to modern superbikes vying for victories, pushing for podium finishes and collecting valuable championship points.
In the KFG Racing Formula Ultra Championship, returning from a campaign in MotoAmerica’s Superstock1000 class, Devon McDonough of Damascus, OR charged out of the gates aboard the new ZX-10. While still early in bike development, McDonough managed a clear win in Saturday’s Formula Ultra contest and was the only rider to achieve 1:06’s by doing so in the final lap of the race. Astride ZX-10’s as well, Kevin Pinkstaff and Jeremey Coffey put up the fight to stay with McDonough but late consistent laps relegated Pinkstaff and Coffey to the second and third steps on the podium, respectively. In the mix and contenders for the 2016 championship, Dan Wilson and Christopher Ancien both showed they had the early pace to contest the leaders. In Sunday’s Formula Ultra race, McDonough jumped to an early lead Pinkstaff, Ancien, Coffey and Wilson in tow when a third lap incident forced a restart. On the restart, McDonough stayed out front and was challenged fiercely by Pinkstaff every lap. In a last ditch effort to secure the win, Pinkstaff dove for the lead two corners before the line to take the victory. Dan Wilson managed to take the final spot on the podium. The 2016 title chase is just heating up!

In the APEX Clubman Championship, Andy DiBrino of Tualitin, OR returned to winning form by dominating the 600 and 750 Supersport races while also turning in a very respectable 9th while riding a 600cc machine in the liter bike heavy Formula Ultra. In Ultralightweight Superbike action, Adam Faussett, Jason Gasparinatos, and Alex Taylor battled at the front, changing lead multiple times. Fausett, with an earlier win in Ultralightweight GP, snatched the victory with a draft pass to the line. From third, Taylor established a new lap record for the class of 1:22.8. Taylor would also take two wins in the 250 Ninja Cup the opening weekend. The Open Sportsman grid was packed this weekend and Alex Lou took both races on his Yamaha R6. Devon McDonough makes a splash in the top 5 of the Clubman Championship with wins in Open Supersport and Open Superbike. With the Clubman series a catch-all championship, watch out for Oliver Jervis, winner of Formula 4 and Middleweight Superbike. Other notable contenders are Chris Page of Portland, OR having achieve a win in Lightweight Superbike and a few podium finishes. Keep an eye on this championship, where class size matters and champions can come from any variety of machines.

In the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, two-time champion, Mica Grohn of Portland, OR jumped out early in the championship by consistently landing on the podium all weekend. Ryan Shanahan of Portland, OR piloted his vintage Honda to take the double in Lightweight Vintage securing second spot in the championship. Dean Willoughby first place finishes and a second to close out the season second in the championship. OMRRA newcomer, Lorraine Crussell of Pleasanton, CA made a splash over the weekend by taking both wins in Vintage Middleweight. Keep an eye on Crussell, Nielsen, Willoughby and other notables looking to disrupt the reign of Grohn as the Vintage Championship heats up!
