McDonough Wins AFM Races At Thunderhill, Siglin Takes Home AFM #1 Plate

SEVENTH WINNER OF FORMULA PACIFIC IN SEVEN RACES

The stage was set for an epic shootout at Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, CA, the weekend of Oct. 4-5. The skies were clear and blue and the temperature was near ideal for two days of racing on the 3 mile classic circuit with the RaceFulez/CT Racing Pirelli/Mach1 Motorsports/Yamaha AFM series.

The Formula Pacific showdown could not have been scripted better. There were just five points separating Chris Siglin and his Fastline Performance BMW on Pirellis (253 pts) from Lenny Hale on his KFG Racing Suzuki GSXR1000 on Dunlops (248 pts). While the bigger picture of the overall #1 plate had to be on their minds, others, including the current #1 plate holder Ricky Corey atop his RCR Yamaha YZF-R1 on Dunlops, AMA veteran Jake Lewis on his Meen Motorsports YZF-R1 on Dunlops and the young sensation Devon McDonough on his KFG Racing Suzuki GSXR1000 on Pirellis were all looking for a round 7 Formula Pacific win along with the rest of the deeply talented field.

The drama heated up before the warm up lap even started as Ricky Corey’s crew found that his rear tire warmer failed and his tire was cold. Corey made a decision to lower his tire pressure and headed out to the track. Corey still had a chance to take the #1 plate a third time, but he would have to win and put riders between himself and Siglin and Hale.

The green flag dropped and the riders shot into turn 1. McDonough, challenging with his liter bike for the first time in Formula Pacific, got a great start along with Siglin. The field charged into turn 2, which has proven to be Hale’s sweet spot. Hale carried much more speed than the rest of the field through the corner, leaving rubber on the track from his front tire the length of the fast, 180 degree left hand corner as he pushed his bike to the very limit around the outside of the turn. Over the top of turn 5, it was Hale, McDonough, Siglin, Lewis, Jason Lauritzen and Corey. The six bikes streamed through the corners in that order for the rest of the lap.

Corey, with his tire heating up, made his move on Lauritzen in turn 1 on the second lap. The pack of five riders up front broke away and dropped into the low 1:49s. Hale pulled out a small gap as the riders behind him each tested each other corner after corner. On the third lap, Siglin took McDonough in turn 1, which meant that if they stayed in that order, the points would be tied. All the riders kept their heads down and continued to turn near identical lap times.

On the fifth lap, Siglin and McDonough made up the distance to Hale and each made a run for the lead and were clocked at 170 mph as they relegated Hale back to 3rd place heading into the sixth lap. Hale immediately fought back in turn 2 while Corey gained a spot in the same place as Lewis ran wide. The race continued to heat up as Hale retook the lead near the end of the lap. McDonough started charging again as they entered turn 1, but ran wide and allowed Siglin to immediately retake 2nd. McDonough got hard on the gas and repassed Siglin in turn 2 and then pushed for the lead, overtaking Hale in turn 14.

With one lap to go, the order was McDonough, Hale, Siglin, Corey and Lewis. Siglin pushed hard and passed Hale in turn 3, only to have Hale swing around him in turn 4. Having lost some of his drive, Hale was not able to hold off Siglin out of turn 4, but managed to swing around the outside of him and slam the door on him in turn 5, again placing his bike where Siglin wanted to be. This time, Siglin lost his drive and a position to Corey, who then started to make a run on Hale. Siglin, knowing that he could not let Hale get away, charged deep into turn 9 and got past Corey, only to lose the spot again in turn 10. With only a few corners left, Hale had the points lead.

The final two corners in Thunderhill consist of a tight right hand corner followed by another right that opens onto the front straightaway. Siglin not only had to get past Corey, he had to fight off the hard charging Lewis who pulled alongside Siglin in the tight right hander. Siglin fought off Lewis and used every bit of track as he drove onto the front straightaway, tucking into the slipstream behind Corey. Immediately in front of them, McDonough secured his first Formula Pacific win as Hale came across the line behind him in second. Siglin popped out of the draft and pulled alongside Corey, taking the final spot on the podium by less than a half a bike length.

When the points were tallied, Siglin earned his second #1 plate by just one point in a year that saw seven different winners in seven different races. Upon hearing the news, Siglin dedicated the #1 plate to five-time #1 plate holder Dave Stanton.

McDonough backed up his Formula Pacific win by jumping back on his 600 and taking the top spot in Keigwin’s at the Track 600 Production. Andy DiBrino continued his hot streak with wins in 750 Superbike, 750 Production and 600 Superbike. Jason Catching closed out the year by taking four races, Cox Radiator Guards Formula 4, 650 Twins, 650 Production and Formula 40 Lightweight.
