Numerous media outlets have reported that former professional racer Joseph Brian Gibbs, best known as Brian Gibbs, exchanged gunfire with police Wednesday, July 21 in Atlanta, Georgia. According to reports, police responding to a report of a motorcycle theft in progress and encountered Gibbs and two other men. As they approached, Gibbs, 39, and police exchanged gunfire. Gibbs allegedly shot Georgia State Capitol police officer Mark Edge. Gibbs was then shot by police and taken to a local hospital in critical condition, according to www.cbsatalanta.com. The other two men fled the scene on foot. Gibbs is being charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, according to reports. Gibbs was also arrested in a drug sting operation in Hampton, Georgia, in October of 2007. Gibbs’ last known professional ride was with the Hooters Suzuki team in the AMA Supersport and Formula Xtreme classes in 2007.
