Stefano Mesa won the Unlimited Grand Prix race during CCS Florida’s opening round February 16 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Riding his DMS Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R, Mesa nabbed the holeshot from the second row and led the race from start to finish. Dwyer finished second on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, and Felipe MacLean finished third on his Kawasaki ZX-10R. Bruno Silva, riding another Kawasaki ZX-10R, and Scott Harwell, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

“The bike’s amazing,”

Mesa exclaimed. “The DMS crew worked so hard to be here today. We’ve had a lot of trouble this weekend with the suspension, but Thermosman (Suspension) and my mechanic, Paco, worked really hard to get it where it’s at right now. We got to a point where I could ride pretty fast. We got to a good pace, and we got good lap times. I got a good launch with the ZX-10. I got the holeshot, and I just put my head down because I knew Sean was behind me.”

On the podium, Mesa was given a new set of Dunlop tires from Race Tire Service for winning the Unlimited Grand Prix race on Dunlops.

Mesa started the day by winning the GTO race. Dwyer took the holeshot and led the first lap of the race, but a red-flag incident sent the riders back to the grid for a restart. MacLean nabbed the holeshot at the restart with

Mesa, Silva, Dwyer, and Harwell close behind. But Mesa maneuvered his way to the front by lap two and opened a gap on the rest of the field. Dwyer, pulled out of the race after six laps. Mesa crossed the finish line without further challenge with MacLean and Silva finishing second and third, respectively.

Mesa finished second in Unlimited Superbike to Dwyer, who had swapped his Kawasaki for his “old faithful” Suzuki GSX-R1000. MacLean led the first five laps of the race on his Kawasaki, but on the final lap, Dwyer used traffic to his advantage, getting out front and taking the victory.

“Stefano’s going to be tough,” Dwyer stated on the podium. “When I saw he was going to be on the DMS bike I was like, ‘Alright, these guys keep putting different riders on that thing. They got a good one. It’s a Florida boy who’s going to kick my butt. That’s pretty cool.’ I’ve seen Stefano coming up. The kid rides awesome. I’m stoked to see him get this opportunity and make the most of it.”

The season-opening event presented many new Expert competitors and many great race battles with the most race winners in a long while. Of these, Charlie Mavros was the winningest racer of the event with four first-place finishes. Mavros won the Lightweight Grand Prix, Lightweight Formula 40, Lightweight Superbike, and Thunderbike classes.

Dwyer is donating his winnings to Kids Cancer Foundation in Royal Palm Beach, Florida (http://www.kidscancersf.org/), in an effort to help raise awareness for their cause.

Mesa will also be competing on the DMS Racing Kawasaki ZX-10R in AMA Pro Racing’s Superbike class this season.
