Shreve Takes the Double at ASMA’s Season Opener

Expert Mikey Shreve won two races last Sunday, March 12 at Arroyo Seco Raceway near Deming, New Mexico. Shreve’s dominating performance this first round of the season is a clear indication that he will once again be a serious contender for the premier Evan Steel Performance Formula Arroyo race.

Having been promoted to expert after winning the Speedcell Formula Amateur series in 2016, Joe Chasser proved he was worthy of battling with the fastest, as a stellar performance in the Formula Arroyo qualification landed him on the front row of the grid between Shreve and the pole sitter and reigning champion David Hurtado.

At the raise of the green flag, it was Chasser and his Yamaha YZF-R1 reacting fastest and he nabbed the hole shot. Shreve, also on an R1, and Tom Savoca and his Kawasaki ZX10 followed in the two and three spot, respectively. Unfortunately for Chasser, his lead was short lived as his front tire touched Shreve’s rear tire, causing him to tuck the front in the 80mph turn 3 on the very first lap, leaving Tom Savoca to inherit second place.

Hurtado and his Kawasaki ZX-10R climbed into the second position when he passed Savoca on the back straight during the second lap, but by then race-leader Shreve had built a comfortable gap, which he would refuse to surrender as he continued quick laps, one of them a personal best 1:08.176 for the clockwise configuration. On the fifth lap, dirt and dust erupted from the infield when Hurtado low-sided in the Carousel. The rest of the race was smooth-sailing for Shreve and he would be first to meet the checkers, but the final two spots of the podium were hotly contested until the very end.

With Hurtado out of the race, Savoca and Josh Kauffman fell into the two and three spot, respectively. But Kauffman, unsatisfied with the last step of the podium, closed in on Savoca with a succession of fast laps. Kauffman, however, never made the pass and instead was overtaken by the 2015 Formula Arroyo champ Thibault Few during the sixth lap. Two laps later Few out-broke Savoca on the back straight for the pass into second, but Savoca reclaimed his position also on the back straight just before the race finish when Few began to run out of fuel.

The ASMA second round will take place Sunday, April 9, with testing scheduled for Saturday.

Mikey Shreve:

“I wanted to start the year with a different approach than last season–––to just have fun, and it paid off. For the money race (the Formula Arroyo), the goal was to gap (Hurtado) as much as possible the first few laps. It’s been about ten years since winning the Formula (Arroyo). I’m looking forward to having fun all season with ASMA.”

Tom Savoca:

“Phil Allison from Evan Steel Performance saved me. There were all sorts of issues with the throttle during the first race. He fixed some things and we got through without traction control, and I was about a second off my usual times. But it was great battling with those guys; I knew I had to get in and out of the corners as fast as I could, and to be as big as I could to keep them behind me.”
