Miller Motorsports Park (MMP), a road course currently under construction in Tooele, Utah, just west of Salt Lake City, is planning to host a five-event Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains (MoM) Motorcycle Roadracing Championship Series in 2006, and if the track’s plans come to fruition, this will not be a normal local race series. MMP is planning a variety of unique elements to go with the series that will make it more attractive, affordable and convenient for racers, which in turn, it hopes, will grow the motorcycle road racing population, and popularity, in the region. For starters, MMP will take advantage of the fact that its course can be run in different configurations and three versions, including the full, 4.5-mile course, will be run in 2006. On May 26-28 and August 18-20, MoM will run on the 2.24-mile East Course, on July 28-30 and September 15-17 it will run on the 2.2-mile West Course and on October 20-22 MoM will run on the full, 4.5-mile course. All events will feature a practice day on Friday. In hopes of attracting riders from surrounding states, MoM race day schedules will be catered to accommodate long travel times, races will by gridded by timed qualifying, classes will be structured to resemble those of neighboring sanctioning bodies and the races will be supported by contingency money from at least one major manufacturer and possibly more. To make racing the series more affordable for local riders, MMP has developed several unique programs. Businesses that sponsor local racers in the series will have their sponsorship matched dollar-for-dollar by MMP with exposure at the track with things like track signage. Under the “Hero Card” program, racers of the series can order personalized Hero Cards with their name, race number and a race season schedule printed on them. Racers then distribute these cards to family, friends, associates and/or strangers on the street. When a person presents the Hero Card with a full-price admission at the gate on race day, that racer will receive a $5 credit toward their next month’s entry fees. The Utah Sport Bike Association (USBA) will develop the technical and competition regulations and run the MoM series’ races, while MMP will focus on administration, promotion and other behind-the-scenes duties. Coordination between the two parties will be simplified with the appointment of 2006 USBA President Dan Solomon as MMP’s full-time Motorcycle Racing Director. “This way we can be assured of a series run by motorcycle enthusiasts, for motorcycle enthusiasts, and one that is promoted and operated on a full-time basis by a dedicated management staff,” Alan Wilson, designer, CEO and General Manager of MMP, wrote in a press release. Wilson also conceived MMp’s innovative sponsorship and Hero Card programs. MoM racers will also enjoy access to MMP’s Club House, free overnight camping in the 24-acre paved paddock, garages available for rent, 24-hour security and the support of an IHC/Life Flight air ambulance for all five events.
