Several AMA teams opened a two-day test today at Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Alabama. Attending the test Monday were: Attack Kawasaki, Corona Light Honda Racing, Honda Racing, LeoVince Foremost Insurance Ducati, Monster Energy Kawasaki, Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki, Team M4 EMGO Suzuki and Team Roadracingworld.com Suzuki. Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki tested without two-time AMA Superbike Champion Ben Spies, who is recovering from minor knee surgery, and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Roger Hayden, who suffered a broken left hand in a crash at Daytona, is not in attendance in Alabama. The day was relatively uneventful, except for a crash by six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin. Mladin quickly picked up his GSX-R1000 Superbike, rode it back to the pits and ended the day with the unofficial fastest lap, a 1:24.0, which matches Spies’ lap record of 1:24.094 and is well under last year’s race pace. The next fastest Superbike rider was, unofficially, Jason DiSalvo, who said he lapped the 2.3-mile course in 1:24.92, slightly faster than his factory Yamaha teammate Eric Bostrom, 1:25.66. Jamie Hacking said he and his team spent the first half of Monday diagnosing and fixing the mysterious problem that plagued all three factory Kawasaki ZX-10Rs at the end of the Superbike race at Daytona. After he resumed actual testing, Hacking said he went faster than he qualified for last year’s race. Unofficial, Random Times 1. Mat Mladin (Suz GSX-R1000), Dunlop, 1:24.0 2.
