Six-time AMA Superbike Champion Mat Mladin turned the fastest lap time Sunday, the final day of the three-day Dunlop tire test at Daytona International Speedway, but Mladin’s teammate Ben Spies, the two-time and defending Champion, was fastest overall. Mladin’s best time on his Rockstar Makita Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Sunday was a 1:36.7, the same time he turned Saturday and marginally slower than Spies’ best time of 1:36.0. Spies recorded his time Saturday, before he left the track to have previously scheduled surgery on his shoulder. Mladin was not concerned with his deficit in the lap times from the test. “This is one of those racetracks I don’t want to get caught up in,” Mladin told reporters. “What everyone’s doing here lap time-wise it’s irrelevant. It really is. You can come here and go reasonably good. And you can come here and go average. It really makes no difference to what you do later on. Everything you do here is just for this racetrack. So I look forward to getting to a proper racetrack and doing some proper testing.” Mladin’s other teammate Tommy Hayden and Michael Jordan Motorsports Suzuki’s Aaron Yates tied for the honor of being second-fastest Sunday with 1:37.3s on their GSX-R1000 Superbikes. Hayden spent his day evaluating new swingarms, while Yates worked on 2008 chassis and brake components. Mladin and Yates both crashed Sunday morning, each walking away from relatively minor lowside crashes. Mladin fell when he got off line going into Turn One, and Yates tucked the front in the new west horseshoe when he tried to ride around a problem with his front suspension. Mladin’s and Yate’s crashes paled in comparison to Jason DiSalvo’s crash, however. DiSalvo suffered a massive highside when he dropped his rear wheel off the track at the exit of the final corner in the infield, according to his Crew Chief Jefferson Burks. DiSalvo landed on his elbow and suffered an injury that required a visit to the hospital for further examination. DiSalvo’s Superbike, a 2008-spec Yamaha YZF-R1 that he was sharing with factory teammate Eric Bostrom, landed upside-down on its fuel tank and burst into flames. The bike, the only 2008 Superbike Yamaha planned to use in winter testing until February, was essentially destroyed between the crash and the fire. DiSalvo’s best time of 1:37.68 was just behind Jamie Hacking, who turned a 1:37.5 on his 2008 Monster Energy Kawasaki ZX-10R. Hacking spent most of the test searching for front end feedback from his virgin machine and final found a direction to go in on the last day of the test. Just behind DiSalvo on the time sheet was Josh Hayes. The two-time and defending AMA Formula Xtreme Champion finished his testing program early (with the fastest FX time of the test, a 1:40.2 on a qualifying tire), and the American Honda team asked him if he would put some laps on one of their 2007 CBR1000RR Superbikes Sunday afternoon. Without making a single adjustment to the machine, Hayes turned a 1:38.33 within a handful of laps. Hayes also rode the mildly-tuned 2008 CBR1000RR Superbike and did a 1:39.96, nearly identical to the 1:39.89 American Honda’s Neil Hodgson did on the same machine in a limited number of laps. With the 2008 CBR1000RR in a very early stage of development and considering he will race a 600cc machine for the first time ever in the 2008 Daytona 200, Hodgson spent most of his test on his CBR600RR Formula Xtreme bike. Hodgson’s best FX time was a 1:40.77, just a tad slower than the best efforts of Hayes and Hayes’ Erion Honda teammate Jake Zemke (1:40.61). Yamaha’s Eric Bostrom did not ride Sunday, as he said it would be a waste to test anything on his 2007-spec YZF-R1 because the 2008 bike “is so much better.” Erion Honda’s Shea Fouchek did not ride Sunday because he was too banged up from his highside crash on Saturday, according to his Crew Chief Robert Ward. As Dunlop’s teams packed up and left the track Sunday evening, Pirelli’s teams moved into the paddock to prepare for their tire test Monday and Tuesday.
