Round 6 of 7 of Spanish 1000cc Extreme Morales Wins, Noyes 4th (Or Was He 3rd?) The transponders said that Kenny Noyes was fourth by 0.023 of a second at the line but the live TV images seemed to give Noyes (Suzuki Motorrad) at very worst a dead heat with two time Spanish Champion (in 250 and 1000cc Extreme) Jose Luis Cardoso (Blussens Suzuki). As there was no photo-finish system in place and transponder times are final, the result stands and Kenny said, “I sure felt that out handlebars were side by side when I went over the line, but you can´t really tell from the bike and I have to hand it to José Luis for getting it inside us on the final corner. I thought I had the door shut, but I left a crack and he made a close, clean pass. We have one more shot at him and at Morales and del Amor next week at Jerez.” If third was in doubt, first place was still up for grabs until half distance when Carmelo Morales managed to pull a half-second advantage over his Yamaha L´Oreal Yamaha team mate Javier del Amor, Cardoso (Blussens Suzuki) and Noyes. Early leader Xavier Fores (D´Antin Kawasaki) started from the pole and led the opening laps, but eventually faded to fourth. Morales was first past the Kawasaki while del Amor, Fores, Noyes and Cardoso fought for second giving Morales an opportunity to take a small advantage. Noyes, who was eighth on the first lap after a sluggish start off the front row, was repeatedly passed by both del Amor and Foret down the long home straight, but his Suzuki was working well in the T1 section allowing him to retake positions. Del Amor managed to break the draft and pull a slight gap. By the time Noyes got by Foret, del Amor was a second clear, leaving the Kawasaki, and the two Suzukis to battle for third. Noyes and Cardoso left Fores and exchanged places several times over the final laps with Noyes leading at the start of the final lap and into the final downhill left-hander, but Cardoso came alongside on the brakes and the two accelerated out of the final corner wheel to wheel. Kenny summed up the weekend: “We wanted that podium and I really thought we had it, but I learned something today from a guy who has been doing this a few years in World 250, World 500, MotoGP and World Superbikes. What I have to say about Cardoso is that he races hard and clean. He could have taken me up over the kerb but he didn´t coming out of that last corner. I should have kept down lower but I thought I had him covered there. We have had fastest lap now at the last three races, but still no win. Jerez is my favorite track and it’s coming up next week. Morales, del Amor and Cardoso are fighting for the title, but we’ll be fighting just as hard to get our first win.” The final round of the Spanish Championship takes place next weekend with Morales, del Amor and Cardoso covered by just ten points, and Noyes now up to fourth in the points table with an eight point lead over Bernat Martinez who retired when running seventh with fuel delivery problems.
