CCS Mid-Atlantic/Southeast Carolina Motorsports Park Kershaw, South Carolina April 10-11, 2010 By Lisa Theobald Greg Melka and Nate Kern each won seven races at the CCS Twin Sprints, regional event at CMP this past weekend. On Saturday, Kern dominated the unlimited classes with his BMW S1000RR, nabbing early leads and winning four races on the first day of the double races weekend event. Kern was out front from start to finish in the GTO, Unlimited Superbike, and Unlimited Grand Prix races. Kern was leading the way in the Unlimited Supersport race, and pulled into pit road for a stop and go penalty for jumping the start, knocking him back to fourth place, briefly. After just a few laps of catch up, Kern was back out front to win the final race of the day. Melka started the day, with an early lead to victory in the first event on the schedule, GTU. He went on to win the Middleweight Grand Prix and Heavyweight Supersport classes with his R6. He also finished second to Andres Londono in Middleweight Superbike and second to David Brown in Heavyweight Superbike. All races but the GTs were run again on Sunday. Melka came back to take four first place finishes in the Heavyweight Supersport, Middleweight Supersport, Middleweight Grand Prix, and Middleweight Superbike classes. Kern was back out front and took victories again in the Unlimited Grand Prix, Unlimited Supersport, and Unlimited Superbike races. Chad Martin won both legs of the Amateur Unlimited Grand Prix races on Saturday and Sunday. The winningest Amateur racer of the weekend was Florida’s Sean Cassell, who nabbed nine victories out of the 11 races he ran. On Saturday, Cassell won the GTU, Middleweight Superbike, Middleweight Grand Prix, Heavyweight Superbike, and Heavyweight Supersport classes on his CBR 600. He finished second to Chris Birdsong in the Middleweight Supersport race. On Sunday, he won the Middleweight Supersport, Heavyweight Superbike, Middleweight Grand Prix, and Middleweight Sueprbike classes. More, from a press release issued on behalf of BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta: Kern and BMW S1000RR 7-for-7 at CMP Championship Cup Series returned to Carolina Motorsports Park this past weekend for a Twin Sprint event, meaning double the scheduled races. Entering and winning all 7 races, Kern’s Pirelli-shod S10000RR was prepared by Dwayne McCracken of Motorcycle Power House in Cumming, GA. Winning GTO, Unlimited Superbike, Unlimited Supersport, and Unlimited Grand Prix on Saturday, Kern followed that up with wins on Sunday in the same Unlimited classes. A highlight of the weekend was the “stop and go” penalty handed down by the starter for a slight jump. Not knowing if it was Kern or the rider next to him, Nate soon found out. Starting the second lap the meatball flag with number 12 displayed made Kern put his head down to open a gap before serving his penalty on pit lane. Re-entering the track in 5th of the 7 lap sprint, Nate and his BMW Motorcycles of Atlanta RR laid down the quickest laps of the day to regain the lead and take the checkered flag. “I am beyond happy about the direction we are going in with the amazing BMW S1000RR,” said Kern. “With such a small amount of resources, but fantastic and industry leading product sponsors, we can prove why the Ohlins 30mm cartridges and TTX rear shock can keep our RR up front.
