Second in 2009 ASBK series for Allerton after Phillip Island finale 2008 Australian Superbike Champion Glenn Allerton finished second overall at Phillip Island’s seventh and final round of this year’s ASBK series last weekend, earning him the number two plate in the championship standings. The Oleon Motologic Racing rider rode his Honda CBR1000RR to second in race one and third in race two during Sunday’s pair of 12-lap events, falling 10 points short of defending his crown onboard the Honda CBR1000RR. Allerton finished the season on 291 points compared with the 301 of new champion Josh Waters, disappointed with the end result after leading the series from round two onwards, but vowing to fight back in 2010 to reclaim the title. The weekend saw 28-year-old Allerton qualify third on the grid following Saturday’s qualifying session and maintaining the two-point lead that he entered the round with, however a double victory by Waters on Sunday was enough to claim the series win. Race one saw Allerton fight for position in the early laps before asserting himself in second position to keep his championship hopes alive, until a difficult opening first lap in the second leg saw him fight back from outside of the top five to eventually cross the finish line in third. Those results earned Allerton his seventh overall podium of the season to maintain his perfect streak in the top three during the season, with five race victories and a single pole position highlighting what has been a strong title defence in 2009. Glenn Allerton Superbike #1: Obviously it’s not the ultimate position I want to be in but overall the team did a great job in supporting me throughout the year. It’s probably my fault that we didn’t pull it off because I’ve had every opportunity to win races in the last four rounds and I haven’t been able to do it, so hats off to Josh he rode really well in the last part of this year and put himself in a position to be the Australian champion. There have been a lot of races at the Island to finish the season and I admit that it’s not my best track on the calendar, but it’s the same for everybody and you have to try and adapt the best you can on every circuit. To lead the championship for most of the season and then lose it at the last round is difficult to accept, but it’s definitely made me more motivated for 2010 and I’ll be back smarter and stronger. Thanks to Paul and Laura Free as well as the entire Motologic team, who really pulled together in a hard battle to round out the season. We only missed out on the title by 10 points and the level of competition is high, so second in the ASBK series isn’t too bad in hindsight. I’m ready and excited for 2010 already, it’s going to be a new year with new circuits and a lot of V8 rounds on the calendar so I can’t wait to get started. More, from a press release issued by TwoThree Public Relations: Pole and race win marks solid finish to Burgess’ ASBK Superstock 1000 season Pole position and a race victory have marked a solid finish to Jordan Burgess’ Australian Superstock 1000 Championship season, finishing second overall at the fifth and final round of the series at Phillip Island in Victoria last weekend. The Teterin Motosport rider rode his Motologic Racing-prepared Honda CBR1000RR to the pole position during Saturday morning’s qualifying session with a new record of 1:37.764 to secure the number one position on the grid for the trio of 10-lap races to be contested throughout the weekend. Race one was staged on Saturday afternoon where a slow start from Burgess halted any opportunity to win the race, working his way into second as arch-rival Pat Medcalf raced to the win on his factory Yamaha to clinch the championship. Sunday morning’s second outing saw Burgess again take second, this time in wet conditions, finishing just 0.044 behind Medcalf to again cement himself as one of the leaders in the STK1000 development category. The third and final race on Sunday afternoon was a dry affair once again, with Burgess building a substantial lead in the early laps and controlling the race from the front. The 24-year-old from Newcastle in New South Wales crossed the line first, rounding out his season at the top of the podium while wrapping up second for the round and the championship. Burgess also put on a strong showing in the premier Superbike category with a superb 10th overall on his Superstock 1000-spec machine including the treaded control tyres, finishing as the top competitor in the Superstock Triple Challenge Cup for the weekend and overall in the series that’s run within the Superbike field. Following a successful rookie season in the Superstock 1000 ranks in his first year on the large capacity bike after stepping up from STK600 for the season, Burgess now has his sights firmly set on contesting the Australian Superbike Championship in the premier class fulltime in 2010. Jordan Burgess Superstock 1000 #33: Wow, what a weekend! I came into this round with clear intention of winning and reinforced this point when I laid down a record lap time on used tires in Q2. The first race I struggled to get off the line, which gave Medcalf a solid lead, and once I got going it was too late to contest for the lead. Race two in the wet I led for most of it until the last corner of the last lap, where Patty got across the line first. This was such a disappointment for me but I was keen to make up for it in race three and that is exactly what I did, put my head down and rode hard and smart to take the win. I would have loved to take the round win here this weekend but congratulations to Pat, he is a mate off the track and a great rider. It was a great achievement to take the honours in the Superstock Triple Challenge and I must thank ESG and International Entertainment Group for making this Cup happen.
