DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Geared up and ready to roll, SunTrust MOTO-ST Series teams are set for an all-new challenge when they take their first lap on the Thunderbolt Raceway course at New Jersey Motorsports Park, August 29-30. Making their debut at this new facility, the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series showcases three classes; The Buell Motorcycle Company SuperSport Twins class (SST) which includes motorcycles producing between 90-118 horsepower, the BMW GrandSport Twins class (GST) covering motorcycles producing 75-90 horsepower and Sport Twins (ST) for machines under 75 horsepower. The next to the last event on the 2008 schedule, this race will be all important to every team in the field. Not only does each team want the prestige of being able to claim the very first two-wheeled victory at this new track, but the available points can easily mean the difference between winning or losing this season’s title. After five events the points are incredibly close in all three classes. In the SST class, defending champion Aprilia USA/Lloyd Brothers Motorsports features top-ranked riding aces Mike Himmelsbach of Quakertown, Pa., and Ty Howard of Weatherford, Texas; the pair hold the lead by a margin of three points. Right behind is Touring Sport Ducati with former World Superbike and Endurance Champion Doug Polen of Camarillo, Calif., and his teammate Ryan Gordon of Fairplay, S.C. In GST, the defending champion Touring Sport Ducati with Frank Shockley, Brad Phillips and Peter Friedland, all from South Carolina, hold the lead with 156 points. However, hot on their heels is James Gang/Hoban Brothers Racing. Headquartered in Waukesha, Wis., this team sits four points behind the leader. Also closing in is the No. 69 RightsForBikers.com. Ranked in third, they are only seven points behind the leader. In the ST class, Pair-A-Nines with AMA Hall of Fame greats Jimmy Filice of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Jay Springsteen of Lapeer, Mich., are tied for first with No. 66 of M4 Avteq Racing from Dallas, Texas. With riders from all over the United States, South America and Italy, the racing action will indeed be fast and furious when the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series teams take to the newly built Thunderbolt Raceway track. For the entire field, racing at New Jersey Motorsports Park represents an all new challenge. No one will have an extra edge as no one has raced on the track before and that puts everyone on equal footing and that definitely makes for some exciting racing. A true test of both man and machine, the SunTrust MOTO-ST Series gives race fans a chance to see a variety of different machinery in action including motorcycles from BMW, Ducati, Suzuki, Aprilia, Buell, Kawasaki and more. This is an event not to be missed. It will be an all out battle from beginning to end. The SunTrust MOTO-ST Series is organized and sanctioned by Professional Motorsports Productions (PMP) of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and the Grand American Road Racing Association (Grand-Am), based in Daytona Beach, Fla., provides the series with administrative and commercial support. More, from a press release issued by New Jersey Motorsports Park: Officials and staff at New Jersey Motorsports Park are gearing up for their biggest spectator event to date, featuring the Super Car Life 250 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. The track will play host to six races over the weekend, spanning the Grand-Am Rolex, KONI Challenge, Ford Mustang Challenge, Skip Barber, Ferrari Challenge and MOTO-ST Series. More than 300 drivers and riders are expected to participate. The marquee Rolex Sports Car Series features two classes of cars that compete on track at the same time; the larger, more powerful Daytona Prototype cars and production-based GT cars, both of which require teams of at least two drivers. The Rolex Series race, held on Sunday, August 31, will run for either 250 miles or 2 ¾ hours, whichever comes first. The Rolex Series is home to many notable teams and drivers, including Chip Ganassi Racing and former Formula One and IndyCar drivers, superstars like Scott Pruett and famous racing sons David Donohue and Alex Gurney. The KONI Challenge Series also features two classes of cars and more than 100 cars in an average race. Sunday’s KONI Challenge race will run 2 ½ hours or 250 miles, whichever comes first. Juggling the logistical needs of 6 series and their requisite hundreds of team members is a heady task, but NJMP Development Project Manager and Principal Joe Savaro says his team is prepared. “We’ve been working non-stop for the last year to build a facility capable of hosting both NJMP Driver’s Club members and track rental traffic, but also marquee events like the SuperCar Life 250. We’ve been open for business since early July and feel that our staff everyone from the security and concessions folks to the Millville Rescue Squad and corporate partners is ready to handle our first ‘major’ spectator event. It’s going to be an exciting weekend of work for all of us, and we’re thrilled to deliver a world class professional Motorsports event. Personally, I can’t wait to see the Daytona Prototypes on Thunderbolt Raceway, that will definitely be a milestone moment for us!” Local Teams, Local Drivers The New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia region is home to several drivers in the Rolex Sports Car Series, as well as several of the teams, including: Jim Lowe, JLowe Racing, Bryn Mawr, PA David Donohue, Brumos Porsche, Malvern, PA.
