KTM HMC Racing’s Chris Fillmore Battles for Top Five Before Mechanical Issue Ends His Day
MONTEREY, Calif. – KTM HMC Racing’s Chris Fillmore experienced a tough day of racing at Sunday’s MotoAmerica Series doubleheader at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California., spoiled by mixed weather in race one and a mechanical issue in race two.
Fillmore qualified in the seventh place position for the combined Superbike/Superstock 1000 races aboard his KTM 1190 RC8 R. Following a series of rain showers in the morning, race one presented a variety of track conditions. Fillmore began the race inside the top ten but lost substantial time after stopping in the pit to swap a front rain tire for a slick tire as track conditions had dried quickly from the start of the race. As a result, Fillmore finished ninth place in race one.
In race two, Fillmore began once again with the seventh place position on the grid. Due to an incident that involved several riders off the start, the race was red flagged and restarted. Fillmore got a good jump off the restart, making his way just outside the top five on the opening lap. The Michigan native maintained sixth place through the first seven laps until a mechanical issue on lap seven ended the day for Fillmore and the KTM HMC Racing squad.
“I am just really glad I am safe,” stated Fillmore. “It was a really challenging race weekend at a track I normally look forward to racing. We have one more race left and I am hoping to pull off a top five for the team at the final event.”
The MotoAmerica Series heads to New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, New Jersey on Sept. 11-13. For more information, please visit www.ktm.com.

Beaubier Wins Superbike Race 2 At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca To Move Into A Tie For The Championship Lead With Teammate Hayes
Monterey, CA – July 19, 2015 – MotoAmerica’s two Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Superbike riders each got a win on Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna, but Race 2 of the day was the far more dramatic result as Cameron Beaubier, rider of the #6 Yamaha YZF-R1, made a bold pass on second-place finisher Roger Hayden in the final turn and on the final lap of the race to notch his sixth win of the 2015 season. Four-time and defending AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes, who was in the lead earlier in the race, rounded out the podium in third place.
The beginning of the race looked like it might shape up to be a repeat of Race 1, with Josh threatening to build another one of his patented leads and eventual victories, while Cameron was back in fourth place. The 22-year-old northern Californian is a very determined rider, however, and he fought hard, made some skilled passes, and got the win after coming up short to Josh in Race 1. It was a memorable performance by Cameron, whose skill and racecraft are both well beyond his years.
“I’m glad I redeemed myself after Race 1,” Cameron said. “I definitely got schooled by Josh in that first race. But, I put it behind me and focused on Race 2. It was an exciting race with a lot of passing. I felt stronger as the race wore on, and I was able catch back up and take the lead. It’s hard to get around anyone here, so you have to make some pretty tough passes if you want to win…and I wanted to win!”
Josh commented, “It was a long day, and the morning race was so much different than this one at the end of the day. I rode the best race I could, got to the front, and tried to hang on. When Cam got by me, I tried to pass him back, but I just didn’t have anything for him. And, when Roger and Cam got into their battle, I thought there might be something there for me to work with at the end, but I had to settle for third.”
With Cameron going 2-1 and Josh going 1-3 on the day, Cameron gained back the four points that he was behind in the Championship, and the two Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha teammates are now tied for the title.
The Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha team will return to action on the weekend of August 7-9, when the MotoAmerica series shares the world stage at Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

Chris Ulrich leaves Laguna Seca happy with two solid finishes on GEICO Suzuki
SALINAS, Calif. (July 19) — GEICO Suzuki rider Chris Ulrich finished the weekend strong by taking two top-five finishes in the Superbike class at the GEICO MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Motorcycle Road Racing Championship event on Sunday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Ulrich also finished in the top 10 in the Superbike/Superstock 1000 races.
“Two top-fives in Superbike and 10th overall, it feels great,” Ulrich said. “I’m really happy for the team. They did a great job and they put in a lot of hard work. The team shares the good and bad with me when things don’t go well, such as mechanical issues or crashing or great finishes. So I’m definitely happy with the two top-fives in the Superbike class and two top-10s overall.”
Ulrich made a wise, last-minute decision to change to slick tires on the grid before his first race. With some quick thinking, some intuition, and a lot of experience, his choice prevented him from having to pit mid-race for a tire change.
“That’s something that comes with experience,” Ulrich said. “I had that same situation in 2012 at Homestead and I picked wrong. Today we went out with that same kind of setting. We got out to the grid, and I said, ‘We need to get slicks on,’ so the boys backed me up and did a great job getting the tires changed.”
Tire decisions were crucial today because some rainfall earlier in the morning created a wet, slick track.
“The start of the first race was difficult because in that situation you don’t really know what you have,” Ulrich said. “When it goes, it lets go, and so once I got used to that I just picked through the field and had another great battle, but overall it was a great race.”
Ulrich ended up fifth in Superbike and seventh overall in the first 23-lap race. He backed that up with a fifth in Superbike and 10th overall in the second race, which was shortened to 18 laps.
“It just feels so good to do the weekend well without any hiccups and to get 100 laps on the bike without issues,” Ulrich said. “I’m really proud of the guys for sorting that all out. It really allowed us to raise our game and our performance. Now we know where we stand, kind of our baseline, and we will work on a few things with the front end of the bike going into Indianapolis, and it will allow us to improve our results overall.
“It feels good to get two solid races and start the last third of the season strong. Now we can go into the next race and build on something strong and reward our team and sponsors.”
Chris Ulrich has two weeks off before heading to Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Aug. 7-9.
“I plan to work hard during this time off and maintain my fitness and improve if we can during the short break,” Ulrich said. “The guys will go back home and work on some different fork specifications and try some different front tires for the next race. I’m going to take this momentum into Indianapolis and improve on it all.”
