Two-time and defending Champion Jake Gagne was quickest during MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Free Practice One (FP1) Friday morning at Barber Motorsports Park, in Birmingham, Alabama.
Riding his Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha YZF-R1 a little over two weeks after having “arm pump” surgery on his right forearm, Gagne turned a lap time of 1:23.123 on the 2.3-mile road course. Although that was not a lap record of any kind, it was one second faster than the next-best rider.
The best of the rest was Josh Herrin, who did a 1:24.119 on his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC Panigale V4 R. Third-fastest was Gagne’s teammate Cameron Petersen at 1:24.394. PJ Jacobsen was fourth-quickest with a 1:24.499 on his Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW M 1000 RR. Richie Escalante rounded out the top five in the opening session with a 1:24.729 on his Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki GSX-R1000R.
