Omega Moto aiming for strong, consistent results at MotoAmerica Championship of Sonoma
Rider Geoff May hopes to build off gritty performance at previous round to move team’s Yamaha YZF-R1 package up the Superbike Class running order
ROSEVILLE, Calif. – After a constructive start to the Omega Moto team’s collaboration with veteran rider Geoff May, the team is expecting even better results at the upcoming MotoAmerica Championship of Sonoma. The team now possesses a race weekend of experience working with May, as well as data from the previous round at Utah Motorsports Campus. The experience and data should help the team get its Yamaha YZF-R1 package dialed in more quickly for May when the series visits Sonoma Raceway Aug. 10-12.
May scored a top-10 finish in his debut race with the team at the MotoAmerica Championship of Utah. Despite problems that developed with the team’s motorcycle during the second Superbike Class race of the weekend, May was unfazed and finished that race in the points.
“I am excited to get back to action with Omega Moto,” May said. “I feel we made good progress at Utah Motorsports Campus. The team and I built a great working relationship in a short amount of time and we established a direction with the setup quickly. We will have some new pieces to try at Sonoma and I am confident I will be able to move the bike farther up the field.”
The team’s next task is to get their R1 set up for the technical, undulating, 2.52-mile Sonoma Raceway road course. It is the team’s home track and May has ample previous experience racing at the facility.
“Our first weekend working with Geoff was a productive one,” Team Principal Ken Chewey said. “The team really gelled around Geoff. His input and experience are helping the team improve our Yamaha R1 package quickly. He showed mental toughness and focus at the previous round when he continued to race despite the problems our bike was experiencing. Sonoma is a challenging track to set a bike up for but both the team’s and Geoff’s experience competing there will hopefully give us an edge over our competition.”
The MotoAmerica Superbike Class races on Saturday, Aug. 11, and Sunday, Aug. 12, are scheduled to be broadcast live on beIN Sports and beIN Sports Connect. Both broadcasts are scheduled to start at 6:25 p.m. Eastern/3:25 p.m. Pacific.
