Four-time AMA Pro Superbike Champion Josh Hayes was the fastest rider during Motul Superbike/Bazzaz Superstock 1000 Qualifying Practice One Friday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Riding his Monster Energy/Yamalube Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike, Hayes turned a lap time of 1:25.118 around the historic 2.2-mile circuit and said he didn’t expect to be on the top of the time sheets.

“I’m kind of surprised to be P1 and that no one went any faster there at the end,” Hayes told Roadracingworld.com. “It could have been the traffic, because there were quite a few riders out there that weren’t exactly on the pace. I got a pretty clean lap in, and it was OK. I made it through the first session, and that was my first goal. Now we’ve got some information to work with, and we’ll try to come up with something better for this afternoon.”

Hayes was nearly matched by his teammate Cameron Beaubier, the two-time and defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier, who recorded a 1:25.178.

And Josh Herrin was a close third in the session with a 1:25.184 on his HelmetSounds.com/Western Services/Meen Yamaha YZF-R1 Superbike.

Toni Elias was the fastest non-Yamaha rider with a 1:25.360 on his Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike.

South African Mathew Scholtz was fifth overall and the top rider in the Superstock 1000 category with a time of 1:25.467 on his Yamalube/Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1.

Frenchman Sylvain Barrier made his return to the MotoAmerica paddock Friday, after recovering from 11 broken ribs and surgery to have his spleen removed following a major crash during Round Two at Road Atlanta. Barrier’s return was not smooth, however, as the shock linkage on his Brixx Performance BMW S1000RR Superbike (an ex-Josh Brookes Milwaukee BMW World Superbike) failed while he was going through the Corkscrew, causing him to crash. Barrier was uninjured in the crash, according to his team.
