ALEX DUMAS TAKES THE KTM ORANGE BRIGADE ROAD RACING TEAM TO A DOUBLE-VICTORY AT ROUND 2 OF THE MOTOAMERICA JUNIOR CUP
Teammate Sean Ungvarsky Scores a Top-Five Finish in Sunday’s Race 2
Round 2 – MotoAmerica Liqui Moly Junior Cup – May 6, 2018
ALTON, Va. – KTM Orange Brigade road racer Alex Dumas made KTM the only winning brand to emerge from the second round of the 2018 MotoAmerica Liqui Moly Junior Cup, which was held over the weekend at VIRginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. The French-Canadian rider has won every MotoAmerica Junior Cup race he’s started thus far and with his two wins on the weekend, Dumas now assumes the championship lead by 22 points.
Prior to the event at VIR, MotoAmerica made a competitive balance adjustment to the KTM RC 390 R, reducing its engine’s rev limit by 1,000 RPM. Despite the decreased engine performance, Dumas powered his RC 390 R to a nearly-flawless weekend, claiming pole position and a pair of commanding race-wins at the Championship of Virginia.
Dumas’ KTM Orange Brigade teammate, Sean Ungvarsky, had an up-and-down weekend at VIR. Ungvarsky looked strong in practice and qualifying, earning a second-place position behind his teammate Dumas. In Race 1, Ungvarsky was locked in a fierce battle for second-place before crashing out on lap 6. Ungvarsky bounced back for Sunday’s Race 2 as he grabbed a good start and found himself locked in another tight battle for a podium position. Despite struggling with the hotter conditions that Sunday presented, Ungvarsky ultimately brought his KTM RC 390 R home to a fifth-place finish.
Alex Dumas, #23 KTM Orange Brigade Rider: “I had a really good qualifying time and I was able to put my KTM RC 390 R on pole. In Saturday’s race, I put my head down and was able to pull a gap on the rest of the field. I kept my focus and maintained that gap to the end of the race. On Sunday, I felt really good in morning warm up. During Sunday’s race, I was locked in a battle at the front for the first half of the race. I was able to pull another gap from most of the field with another rider. Fortunately for us, the other rider made a mistake and I was able to win the race convincingly. The bike was different to ride with the lower rev limit, and Sunday’s hotter conditions made it difficult to get good drive out of corners. I was able to win both races even with the competitive balance changes, and am very happy with the performance of my KTM RC 390 R. It is the bike to be on in this class and I am looking forward to being back on it at Road America.”
Sean Ungvarsky, #48 KTM Orange Brigade Rider: “On Saturday, the bike felt great in morning qualifying. My team had a great set-up for my KTM RC 390 R and we were able to qualify right behind Alex in second-place for this weekend’s races. I learned a lot from following Alex in qualifying and had great pace in Race 1. Unfortunately, I tucked the front heading into turn 1 after only five laps. I was disappointed but it was a gentle crash and my team had my bike ready to go for Sunday morning’s warm-up session. In Sunday’s race, I felt really good at the start. The intense battle for the podium and hotter conditions began to take their toll on me but I maintained my focus and was able to score a top-five finish for our team. I definitely had to make an adjustment in my riding style with the new lower rev limit and we will be trying some tweaks to make the bike even more competitive at Road America.”
Chris Fillmore, KTM Orange Brigade Team Manager: “Before the weekend began, MotoAmerica decided to take away 1,000 RPM from the KTM RC 390 R’s rev limit. Our riders did not have an opportunity to do any testing with the changed rev limit but they did a great job adapting to the change quickly. Overall, we are very happy with the performance of both of our riders. Sean and Alex work extremely well together and we will be looking for more of the same success we’ve seen from them already at the upcoming rounds.”
Next up on the MotoAmerica Liqui Moly Junior Cup schedule is Road America, taking place June 1-3 in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Both KTM riders will be looking to maintain their record of on-track success and continue demonstrating that the KTM RC 390 R is the bike to have in the MotoAmerica Liqui Moly Junior Cup.
