NEW JERSEY’S BRANDON PAASCH ASSUMES KTM RC CUP POINTS LEAD WITH 1-2 FINISHES AT ROUND 2
KTM RC Cup Round 2 – April 29 – May 1, 2016
MILLVILLE, N.J. – The KTM RC Cup Series made its second stop of 2016 at Round 3 of the Moto America Series over the weekend, where New Jersey’s very own Brandon Paasch assumed the points lead with his second victory of the season at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Additionally, Jody Barry capped off the race weekend in a big way by capturing his first-ever race win on Sunday amidst a constant downpour of rain throughout the race.
Heading into Round 2, Paasch was tied with fellow New Jersey native Anthony Mazziotto III in the Championship point standings, as each rider took a win at the opening round. Extending their momentum, Paasch and Mazziotto laid down the fastest qualifying times of the group on Friday, but it was Paasch who finished in pole position on a fairly wet racetrack.
Saturday presented dry conditions as the 30 riders lined up for race one. It was once again a showdown between the home state boys of Paasch and Mazziotto as they swapped the lead position several times throughout the 13-lap race. Paasch was able to position himself favorably in the final two laps, where he ultimately edged out Mazziotto for the race win. Georgia’s Ashton Yates finished third to capture his first-ever podium finish in the RC Cup.
Perhaps the worst of the weather came during race two on Sunday, where heavy rainfall lasted all race long. Despite the conditions, Paasch and Mazziotto jumped into the front of the pack early on where they engaged in a battle for yet another race win. However, as the rain continued to fall, it was Barry who became stronger. On the final lap, Paasch lost his drive and Barry made the pass to overtake the lead just before the checkers.
“I’m actually thankful for the rain today, the dry wasn’t quite getting it done for me,” Barry commented. “The draft was killing me earlier so I’m thankful to be on the podium today.”
Paasch finished a close 2nd in race two, where he now sits as the only rider to have finished atop the podium at the first four races this season.
“It was a great race, I couldn’t have asked for a better race really,” Paasch said. “I had it set up [to make the pass] and things just didn’t work out but it was a lot of fun battling with those guys and I’m happy to finish on the podium.”
Meanwhile, Northern California native Josh Serne was charging hard from a 10th place start on the opening lap. Serne positioned himself just right as he made the pass on Mazziotto on the final lap to secure his first-ever podium finish in the RC Cup.
“I’ve always loved racing in the rain – from Super Moto to Flat Track – I just excel in the rain,” Serne said. “Today has been a dream-come-true. Last year I started out great and then had some troubles, so come back this year and get my first podium is amazing.”
Mazziotto finished 4th in race two, where he earned valuable points to hold second place in the Championship standings after two rounds of racing.
