Ducati Richmond/KWR Ducati rider/team owner Kyle Wyman has withdrawn from the MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike race Sunday at Ridge Motorsports Park.
“It just doesn’t make sense,” Wyman told Roadracingworld.com. “We’ve wrecked so much stuff and I’ve only got 12 laps on this new track over the last three days.”
Wyman crashed his Ducati Panigale V4 R four laps into the test day on Thursday and broke his Ducati Corse swingarm along with a host of other expensive parts.
His team rebuilt the bike for Friday, but technical problems – including suspected internal engine damage caused by the crash – prevented him from doing any timed laps on Friday.
Wyman’s crew installed the stock engine he’s been racing with since Road Atlanta and he was able to do some laps during Superbike FP3 Saturday morning, earning him a spot at the back of the grid for Race One on Saturday afternoon.
Then during the start of the race, Wyman was caught up in a chain-reaction pile-up in the chicane that brought down at least five riders. And even though the speed of the crash was relatively slow, it resulted in extensive damage to Wyman’s Ducati, including a broken front wheel, radiator, and triple clamps.
“We could put a bike together and go out there for Race Two,” said Wyman, “but starting from the back of the grid again I could end up in another pile-up. It’s just not worth it.
“It’s a bummer because we were fourth in the Championship points coming into this weekend, and now I’m sure we’re going to drop down pretty far.”
