The first day of the MotoAmerica season ended with a mix of machines fighting for the top positions in Supersport, King of The Baggers and Twins Cup. Several of the pre-race favorites spent the day rehearsing running in the draft with other riders, testing their pace under race conditions. Defending and three-time Daytona 200 Champion Josh Herrin, in particular, spent time on his Celtic/Economy Lube + Tire Warhorse Ducati Panigale V2 on the track behind other riders, as drafting is so critical at the Speedway.
Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki had an impressive day, finishing provisional qualifying with Tyler Scott first and Richie Escalante third and rehearsing pit stops during Thursday’s sessions. “We’ve put in the work, we’ve done the testing, and we’re here to get it done,” Scott said after qualifying.
Cory West (1) was third in Super Hooligans practice and second in the first qualifying session for the class. The Harley-Davidson Pan America was the dominant machine in the class, taking the top five positions in practice and in qualifying, and provisional polesitter Travis Wyman set a new lap record for the category.
Isaac Woodworth (27) on a Suzuki GSX-8R and former MotoAmerica Twins Cup Champion Chris Parrish (128) on an Aprilia RS660 run side-by-side on the banking in Twins Cup qualifying. The Aprilias were quickest in both sessions, but Suzuki and Yamaha both were represented near the top of the time sheet.
Loris Baz (78) adapted quickly to his new ride on a King of The Baggers, taking second in provisional qualifying in his first outing on a racebike dramatically different than anything else he has raced in a career that has spanned MotoGP, World Superbike, MotoAmerica Superbike, British Superbike and the FIM Endurance World Championship.
Corey Alexander (23) piloted the new ARCH Racing/Suter Super Hooligan machine that was unveiled at the track, but had a troubled day and did not set a lap time.
