Defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champ Cameron Beaubier Tiptoes Through The Raindrops To Win Superbike Race 1 At New Jersey; Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Teammate Hayes Is Second
Millville, NJ – May 1, 2016 – Prodigious rain during MotoAmerica Superbike Race 1 on Sunday at New Jersey Motorsports Park did not deter the Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Factory Racing team from prevailing, as defending MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier won and four-time AMA Superbike Champion Josh Hayes finished second.
For Cameron, it was his 13th career Superbike victory, and his second on the season, while Josh notched his fourth podium result of the year.
At the start, Josh initially got the jump on Cameron, who earned the pole position in Saturday’s final qualifying, but Cameron tiptoed around his veteran teammate, and took the lead. Josh got back around Cameron again, but Cam was determined to lead the race, which he did from that point all the way to the checkers.
“I felt like I was just riding around there from the start,” said Cameron. “It seemed too easy to give it just a little bit too much throttle, and get into trouble, so I really had to focus on what I was doing. Later in the race, there was a lot of standing water around the course, so I really had to back it down. For me, that was one of the most difficult races I’ve run in my career. I’ve been in rain races before, and I’ve won, but it was really tough out there today. We’ll see how it goes in the second race later today.”
Josh commented, “Pretty early on, I realized that I just wasn’t comfortable at the pace that Cam was going. The rain came down harder later in the race, and it really got pretty tough out there. Cam was running some pretty quick laps, and I got into some traffic, so the gap just got too large. I caught back up to him towards the end, a little bit, and I thought I could make a run at him, but it was better to play it safe and finish the race. It’s great to get a Yamaha 1-2 here, and we’ll be ready to see what we can do in Race 2.”
MotoAmerica Superbike Race 2 from New Jersey Motorsports Park will go green later today at 4:00 PM EST.
