Beaubier Bests Hayes In Superbike Race 1 At Utah Motorsports Campus For A 1-2 Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Factory Racing Finish
Tooele, UT – June 25, 2016 – Starting from the second row of the grid proved to be a non-factor for fast-starting Josh Hayes, who put the experience of his four AMA Superbike Championships to good use, got the holeshot, and led much of Saturday’s Superbike Race 1 at Utah Motorsports Campus. But, in the end, it was Josh’s Monster Energy/Graves/Yamaha Factory Racing teammate Cameron Beaubier, who put the defense of his own MotoAmerica Superbike Championship on display when he made a smooth pass on Josh with three laps remaining, took the lead, ran the fastest lap of the race, and notched his seventh win of the season.
“I had a couple areas of the track where I felt stronger than Josh, and there were a couple of areas where Josh had an advantage on me,” Cameron said. “So, we were pretty evenly matched. I stayed patient and waited for the right time to make my move. Once I got past Josh, I ran a very quick lap, but Josh was still right there with me. I’m glad to get this win, and I can’t wait for Race 2.”
Josh commented, “Really, that race turned the weekend around for me because I wasn’t very comfortable with how things were going. I would have liked to have seen the gap grow for me, but it wasn’t to be. Cameron was riding really well, and I felt like it was the best race I could ride. I rode well the whole race, and I thought I had something for Cam there at the end, but I just couldn’t get back past him.”
