Beach Turns The Tide To Win MotoAmerica Supersport Race 2 At VIR; Gerloff And Herrin Finish Second And Third, Respectively, For Another Yamaha R6 Podium Sweep
Alton, VA – May 17, 2015 – After earning the pole and leading most of Saturday’s MotoAmerica Supersport Race 1 at VIRginia International Raceway, Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha rider JD Beach made sure that he led Sunday’s Supersport Race 2 from start to finish. It was a dominant performance by the Kentuckian, and he never put a wheel wrong all race long.
JD’s teammate Garrett Gerloff, who fractured the little finger on his left hand in Friday’s first qualifying session, put in another gutsy performance as he followed up his impressive third-place finish on Saturday with a jaw-dropping second-place result on Sunday.
Saturday’s race winner Josh Herrin, also aboard a YZF-R6, finished third to complete the all-Yamaha bLU cRU podium.
Based on his victory, JD currently leads the 2015 MotoAmerica Supersport Championship with 102 points, while Garrett is just one point behind in second with 101 points, and Josh is in third with 95 points.
“Right now, I just want to win races,” JD said. “I’ve been working really hard for a long time, and to get the win in the rain at COTA (the Circuit of The Americas in Austin, TX), and then, to win in the dry here at VIR, I’m really happy. Today, I was determined to put the win in my own hands. Garrett rode really well, especially with his injury, and so did Josh. This is a very competitive series, and it’s way too early to think about points, but I’m glad to be leading the Supersport Championship right now.”
About his event-filled weekend, Garrett said, “Being in an ambulance, then at the hospital on Friday, and then, getting on the podium yesterday and again today, I can’t complain about the results. It wasn’t easy, but my Yamalube/Y.E.S./Graves/Yamaha team gave me a great bike and made me comfortable on it. On Tuesday, I’m going to have surgery on my (fractured) finger, so I’m looking forward to getting that fixed and feeling better.”
The Yamaha bLU cRU riders will be back in action for round four of the MotoAmerica series, which will take place at Road America in Elkhart Lake, WI, on May 29 through 31.
