Burleson/Phillips and MotoBros Grab Top Spots With CMRA At Hallett Motor Racing Circuit

Cory Burleson and Alan Phillips grabbed the Overall and Heavyweight wins in the Team 60 race aboard their Yamaha YZF-R6’s while the MotoBros team of Cory Burleson, Isaiah Burleson, and Craig Thomson brought home the Ultra-LW GP and Overall Endurance wins on their Yamaha YZF-R3 in the fourth round of the Ultra-Lightweight Endurance series this past Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) Saturday schedule began with Mini and Lightweight Sprints, the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, and finished with Race Tire Services Team 60, bringing 10 hours of racing trackside to Hallett, Oklahoma. Sunny skies with humid temperatures in the mid-90’s made for fast riding conditions on the 1.8-mile counter-clockwise course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with over 40 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the 500 Superstock, E Superbike, 500 Classic, Ultra LW GP, and 500 Superbike lightweight sprints.

The 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance race had a large turnout, with the endurance classes of Von Hertell Racing Services – 500 Superstock, 500 Classic, Ultra-Lightweight GP, and Road & Track Suspension – E Superstock represented. As the 26 bike grid lined up for the start,a battle was brewing between MotoBros, Your Pace or Mine, MiniMotion, and Sport Riding Coaching. The start lights went out, and the grid surged ahead with MotoBros and Your Pace or Mine out in front, followed by Sport Rider Coaching and MiniMotion. Lawpup Racing and HBR rounded out the top six at the end of hour 1.

Heading into Hour 2, MotoBros held the lead with Your Pace Or Mine hot on their heels. The Yamaha YZF-R3 mounted Sport Rider Coaching team of Brandon Beals, Ben Gooding, Rab McNaught, Jordan Pence, and David Rice stiff-armed MiniMotion for third. With good racing all the way to the back of the grid, the positions did some shuffling as the first round of pit stops started taking place. At the end of hour 2, MotoBros held a one lap lead over the rest of the field, with Your Pace or Mine running second on a Yamaha YZF-R3, and Sport Rider Coaching still clenching third. MiniMotion, Lawpup Racing and HBR rounded out the top spots.

As the teams continued to circulate, the heat index climbed and the lap times stayed fast during hour 3. MotoBros now held a two lap lead over the field as Sport Rider Coaching moved into second, pushing Your Pace or Mine into third. The MiniMotion team ofChris Headley, Jeff Hughes, Ryan Max Johnson, John Orchard, and Mark Windham held fourth on their Honda CBR500R, with Lawpup Racing, also on a Honda CBR500R, fifth, and the Heavy Lightweights moving up into sixth on their Yamaha YZF-R3.

Going into hour 4, MotoBros stretched their lead to three laps over the rest of the field with Sport Riding Coaching holding off MiniMotion for second. Your Pace or Mine slipping to fourth with Von Hertell/Antic Racing team of Isaac Bauman, Simon Cosmo Hertell, John McKenzie, and Jesse Smartt taking their Yamaha YZF-R3 up into fifth. The Heavy Lightweights held down sixth on their Yamaha YZF-R3. Heading into hour 5, the race leaders battled each other for dominance as the MotoBros’ lead shrank to one lap over Sport Rider Coaching in second.

During the final hour, MotoBros held their one lap lead as Sport Rider Coaching wrestled with Your Pace or Mine for second. The Heavy Lightweights team of Dewayne Davis, Andy Gilliland, Sean Gurevich, Ty Howard, and Carl Price slid by Von Hertell/Antic Racing to take fourth, while the Lawpup Racing team ofBrandie Cox, Danny Dominguez, Mitchell Klein, Jordan Pence, and Travis Pence held onto sixth. As the clock wound down, the leaders battled to hold their spots.

MotoBros took the Ultra-LW GP Endurance and overall wins with a fastest lap of 1:26.286 and 238 laps completed. Your Pace or Mine nipped Sport Rider Coaching at the very end for second in Ultra-LW GP Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:25.144 and 237 laps. Sport Rider Coaching brought home third in Ultra-LW GP Endurance and third overall, with a fastest lap of 1:27.881, completing 236 laps. The Heavy Lightweights were next, with fourth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and fourth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:27.290 and 234 laps. Von Hertell/Antic Racing finished next, with fifth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and fifth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:29.588 and 232 laps. Lawpup Racing rounded out the top six, with first in 500 Superstock Endurance and sixth overall, a fastest lap of 1:29.325 and 230 laps.

The Team 60 race rounded out the racing day, with the 14 team grid lined up for the Le Mans style start. The lights went out and the action was fierce, with the Burleson/Phillips team battling the Dominguez/Schultz team for the lead with the McDonald/Tessier team and Graham/Lambert teams in hot pursuit. The 14 team grid was running fast as the pit lane opened and the rider swaps started taking place, the race leaders got away cleanly and continued their furious pursuit of each other the Burleson/Phillips duo tried to shake the tenacious Dominguez/Schultz team off their six. With such close racing action at the front, it was a barn burner to see who was going to end up in the top spots.

As the final seconds on the time clock wound down, Burleson/Phillips took the checkers with a fastest lap of 1:16.685, with Dominguez/Schultz finishing next with second in Heavyweight and second overall and a fastest lap of 1:16.269. McDonald/Tessier edged Graham/Lambert for first in Middleweight and third in overall with a fastest lap of 1:20.302, followed by Fox/Ortega for fifth overall and third in Middleweight with a fastest lap of 1:20.942.
