GRAND PRIX OF AUSTRALIA

QUALIFYING

Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi are in for a unique race day at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. They completed the Warm Up this morning and immediately followed it up with a Q2 session, securing first and fourth place respectively for this afternoon‘s race.

1st MAVERICK VIÑALES 1’28.492 / 8 LAPS

4th VALENTINO ROSSI 1’29.243 / 9 LAPS

With yesterday‘s FP4 being red flagged and the qualifying sessions delayed till this morning, Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP‘s Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi have a busy Sunday. They started the third day of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix weekend with the usual Warm Up, followed by a Q2 session, taking first and fourth place respectively for this afternoon‘s race.

Viñales has been the pace setter throughout the weekend, and this morning was no exception. He dominated Q2 and ended the session in first place with a 1‘28.492s best lap, 0.551s ahead of his closest rival. It is his third pole position of the season.

Rossi was eager to get a good grid position for his 400th Grand Prix start. He needed a bit of time to get up to speed in the 15-minute shoot-out but got a good lap in on his second run. The Italian posted a 1‘29.243s for fourth place, just 0.027s off a front-row start and 0.751s behind his team-mate.

MAVERICK VIÑALES

“I feel good and very positive because on the laps I did I was able to push at my maximum, that‘s very important. Straight away I felt good on hard tyres and soft tyres, so we will try to keep this momentum: start well, get into first place, and push from the beginning. I will try my best as always. The Yamaha is working very good on the track, we need to be careful with the tyres, but anyway, I‘m very happy and feeling very positive.”

VALENTINO ROSSI

“It was a good qualifying session. I’m happy with the second row and I was very close to the front row. I feel good on the bike and we have improved the set-up. Now we have to start thinking about the race. The weather is uncertain, and the choice of the tyres will be crucial. I hope for a completely dry or wet race.”
