FEATURED IN THE MARCH 2019 ISSUE OF ROADRACING WORLD…

The ever-expanding GP race calendar puts a lot of pressure on teams, riders, and budgets, which is why MotoGP officials keep changing the rules to prevent teams from testing so much. This year’s testing restrictions are tighter than ever, with just two three-day pre-season outings (instead of the usual three three-day sessions), plus three one-day sessions during the season, after the Spanish, Catalan, and Czech GPs.

The reduction in testing is important because it
allows full-time MotoGP teams and riders to get some rare downtime. But it
hasn’t reduced costs because it has forced the factories to establish separate
test teams with test riders. The importance of these test teams has increased
in line with the reduction in testing opportunities for the full-time race
teams…

This year, for the first time in Grand Prix
history, every factory has a test team, all of them employing top-class riders
who have won Grand Prix races and/or World Championships. Aprilia has Bradley
Smith, Ducati has Michel Pirro, Honda has Stefan Bradl, KTM has Dani Pedrosa
and Mika Kallio, Suzuki has Sylvain Guintoli, and Yamaha has Jonas Folger.

Mat Oxley/MotoGP Analysis, in the March 2019 issue of Roadracing World

With
fewer opportunities to put new technologies and concepts to the test before the
lights go out on race day, testing teams have become part of every MotoGP’s
racing program. MotoGP Editor Mat Oxley looks at the effort that Sylvain
Guintoli put into making the Suzuki GSX-RR the best-performing Suzuki GP
racebike in decades. It’s all in the March 2019 issue of Roadracing World!
