Arvada, CO – The MRA concluded the 2016 race season with its annual awards ceremony held at the Lamar Street Center car and motorcycle museum. Approximately 250 racers, MRA officials, and family members attended the celebration and were treated to a catered dinner, stocked bar, individual photos, and bench racing aplenty.

After opening remarks from President Jim Wilson and an invocation by Chaplin “Boots” Reimer, Jim Brewer and Autumn Young served as MCs for the evening. The top 5 finishers of each class were called up on stage and awarded a picture plaque. Each class champion gave a short speech where they thanked their sponsors and supporters and talked a little about their season.

The MRA has some special recognition awards where they recognize special achievements and honor past MRA members. Scott Weitmann received the Sportsman of the Year award recognizing a racer who exemplifies the spirit of an MRA racer. Rookie of the Year went to Kevin Boniface for his outstanding first year performance, the Bob Heaton Distinguished Service award went to perennial corner worker Mike Matteson.

Ryan Burke received the Don E. Bruner award which is given in Don’s memory to the Heavyweight Supersport class champion each year. It’s a traveling award and contains the names of some of the MRA’s fastest racers of the past.

Spencer Russell Youth Racing sponsors the Lightweight Grand Prix class in Spencer’s honor. The MRA lost Spencer in 2011 and this year Ray Ray Gaimara won his first ever class championship in Spencer’s class. Congrats to Ray.

Shannon Moham received the Carl Sorensen Award by virtue of winning the Thunderbike championship. The MRA sadly lost Carl while he was competing in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb race in June of 2015. While receiving the award, Moham recalled his memories of Carl as an outstanding competitor, fellow board member, and mostly as a friend. Fittingly, Moham mentioned that Imperial Motorsports had equipped this year’s Thunderbike championship winning Ducati 848 with the same motor that Carl was using during his last run up the mountain at Pikes Peak.

The end of the evening came with the presentation of the top 10 plates for the 2017 season. The MRA awards the top 10 plates based on season points in the Race of the Rockies no-rules class. Notably, Wyeth Jackson became the first female racer in MRA history to break into the MRA’s top 10 with a #7 plate earned on her Kawasaki ZX-6R.

The MRA will start its 2017 race season with the new racers’ school on April 1st at High Plains Raceway.

The Motorcycle Roadracing Association is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information go to http://www.mra-racing.org/
