Baker Out, Gaimara In for MRA Season Opener May 9 & 10
Aurora, CO – Short Bus Race Team riders Tony Baker and Ray Gaimara had last minute changes in plans for the 2015 Motorcycle Roadracing Association Championship Series which will have Gaimara competing, and Baker sitting out the first round of the year.
Backed by AP (Andy Palmer) MotoArts on a Suzuki SV650, Ray Gaimara recently came out of retirement following a two-year hiatus from the racing scene, and debuted his new bike and program at CVMA’s Round 6 in March with encouraging results. Gaimara had all but given up on racing due to multiple back surgeries over the past several years, but was determined to get back to the sport and people he loves. His return to racing was still considered only “a possibility” as recently as February of 2015. “I honestly still can’t believe this is happening! It’s like a dream come true… all over again!” said Gaimara. The full story is featured in the May issue of Roadracing World.
Vickery Motorsports sponsored rider Tony Baker began building a new bike and program for 2015 back in September 2014 with the purchase of a new 2015 Yamaha FZ-07 – with the intent of building a legitimate, modern-era twins class racer. His pre-season debut at CVMA in March showed the bike was capable of running at the front, qualifying on the first row for all races for the weekend and finishing convincingly on the podium against well-sorted SV650’s in the California Desert. Baker also runs a production based, 1992 Suzuki GS500 in the MRA, and used that bike to decimate the CVMA Vintage Light track record – lowering it by nearly 5 seconds that same weekend.
Baker’s plans for 2015 were derailed, however, when his wife was involved in a serious car accident at the end of March, and then hospitalized for a month. As a result, she won’t be able to walk (or drive) for an undetermined amount of time. Baker had this to say about the situation: “Obviously we’re terribly disappointed to have the season start like this, and especially after such a great first outing at Chuckwalla. But we have two school-aged kids, and already have one parent down. Racing is dangerous, and to risk having both of us incapacitated at the same time simply doesn’t make sense. We’re grateful that she wasn’t more seriously hurt, and are looking forward to a full and speedy recovery.” Baker went on to say: “We WILL be at every round this season, whether I’m racing or not – to support Ray and the rest of the Short Bus Race Team crew. Racing is our life during the Summer, and we can’t imagine spending the season without our amazing race family!”
