MRA racer Mike Applehans boosted back into the seat
In club level motorcycle road racing it’s not uncommon to see displays of camaraderie and support from those close to the racer. In just about every racer’s career there are some standout moments that they remember someone going beyond any expectations of help. If you’re a racer reading this right now I’ll bet you can reflect back on someone that really went out of their way to help you fix a bike the night before a race, loaned you a part just in time, or even transported your equipment to the track when your vehicle broke down at the last minute.
The MRA general meeting on Wednesday, March 11, 2015, was treated to a display of one of these moments of spectacular support. Mike Applehans (MRA #25) was badly injured during the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in July 2013. Over the past year and a half, he’s endured many surgeries, months being unable to stand or walk, numerous setbacks, and uncountable rehab sessions. As an employee of High Plains Raceway, his ability to do his normal duties was almost non-existent.
After the general meeting had concluded, Glenn Conser (general manager of High Plains Raceway), Roberta Applehans, and Mike Yoder surprised Mike with a newly race-prepped 2008 Suzuki GSX-R600. Mike is a long-time and well-respected MRA racer so the whole room erupted with applause and admiration of the incredible support shown by Mike’s racing family. This new bike is just what he needed to kick his 2015 race season planning into top gear. The MRA wishes Mike & his wife Roberta a very successful 2015 racing season.
