MRA: Ryan Burke, Shannon Moham Star In Round Six At Pueblo Motorsports Park

Once again, it’s Burke and Moham shining at MRA’s Pueblo event

Pueblo, CO, Sept 10, 2019 – For the second time this year the MRA travelled to Pueblo Motorsports Park, this time for round 6 of the Race of the Rockies championship series. Pueblo is one of the favorites of the fast guys as it “has a nice flow” and usually has interesting weather changes this time of year.

The MRA runs a two day race program with morning practices and afternoon racing both days. Saturday’s races went off relatively well, with one exception being a dramatic crash by Race of the Rockies top 10 racer Mike Applehans on the opening lap of the Open Endurance race. Mike hit the ground exiting turn 7 and ended up in the middle of the track with the entire open and heavyweight fields right behind him. Fortunately, everyone was able to check up and miss Mike, who suffered a broken wrist from the incident. We hope Mike heals up quickly.

Later on Saturday afternoon, the MRA SuperStreet program (led by New Rider Director Jeff Brown) had a surprise guest. Coming out of retirement was former MRA #1 plate holder and Yamaha Champions’ Riding School Lead Instructor Mark Schellinger. Schellinger has been working trackside with Ryan Burke all year and apparently finally had enough of spectating. Schellinger and YCRS founder Nick Ienatsch needed to get some riding video and what better way to do so than to get on the track with the MRA SuperStreet program. As he’s done in the past, Schellinger lit up the track with his textbook smooth riding style which provided the other SuperStreet racers an excellent on track example of what’s possible on a motorcycle.

During Sunday’s Race of the Rockies qualifying Ryan Burke burned up the track with a new Pueblo qualifying record of 1:28.585, besting his previous record set over 3 years ago. Dave Lambert and Dan “Otis” Turner rounded out the top 3 qualifiers for the GTO class. In Race of the Rockies GTU qualifying, James Hinton took the best time at 1:33.688 with Jared Dear next at 1:33.738 and GTU points leader Shannon Moham surprisingly being 3rd best with a 1:34.161.

Shortly after qualifying, Burke took the win in Open Superbike while setting a new absolute track record with a 1:28.559, besting a record set by Rob Christman in June of 2014. Congratulations to Burke!

From the start of Race of the Rockies, it was Ryan Burke off of the front. Burke was never challenged and accomplished the goals of not only securing his 5th consecutive RoR championship, but also setting a new absolute Pueblo track record with a 1:28.559 laptime.

Behind Burke, Dan “Otis” Turner, Dave Lambert, Nyles Gourlie and Sean Thomas all battled for the remaining GTO podium positions. Unfortunately, all race strategy went out the window when the red flag came out on lap 6. Due to race day schedule delays, this was determined to be past the half way point, so the race was called complete by the officials. Scoring reverted to the previous completed lap in which Dave Lambert was running in second with Nyles Gourlie behind him for the third podium position.

GTU class saw Jared Dear get a great start and lead the class while battling with some of the open bikes. Class leader Shannon Moham suffered a terrible start (perhaps overcompensating for receiving a meatball earlier in the day) and whittled his way through traffic to challenge to finally overtake Dear on lap 4. Dennis Stowers was again able to keep pace ahead of the rest of the GTU field to claim the final podium spot.

Once again, class records fell. As mentioned, Ryan Burke again set an absolute track record with a 1:28.559 during Open Superbike and the RoR qualifying record with 1:28.585. He also took the Formula 40 GTO record with a 1:30.726. Additional record setters were Cam Lee with 350 Production qualifying record of a 1:47.645 and a 350 Production race time of 1:47.099. Tyler Valentine took two records with a Supertwins GTU time of 1:38.694 and Lightweight Endurance at 1:37.924. Shannon Moham reset his own records with a 1:33.152 in Thunderbike and 1:32.852 in Middleweight Endurance. Jon Glaefke took the best time in Formula Colorado with a 1:39.330, James Wilkerson in Amateur GTO with a 1:33.389, Jared Dear in Heavyweight Superbike with a 1:33.435, and Dallas Sherman in Novice GTO with 1:33.847.
