Ryan Burke and Shannon Moham win MRA Race of the Rockies
opener at High Plains Raceway
Byers, CO, May 15, 2019 – The Motorcycle Roadracing
Association opened the 2019 season with a very well attended race weekend at
High Plains Raceway. As has become
customary, the eastern Colorado weather started off very cold and wet for
Friday’s practice day – so much so that HPR management opted to start practice
after lunch.
Fortunately, the weather improved for the race weekend
with full schedules and grids for the rest of the event. The north course configuration was used this
time, which features a slightly shortened back straightaway and a much faster
entrance to the downhill turns of 9a, 9b, and 10. Being only 1.86 miles in length with 12 turns
makes the smaller displacement bikes much more competitive against the bigger
engines.
Returning Race of the Rockies champions Ryan Burke (GTO)
and Shannon Moham (GTU) were both in attendance and ready to defend their
titles. On Saturday, Moham fell victim
to the fast turn 9b and lost the front end descending the hill. The long slide took him well into the runoff
area and ended his participation in heavyweight Supersport. Undeterred, the injured Moham later gridded
up and finished the day with impressive wins in middleweight and heavyweight
endurance.
On Sunday morning, Race of the Rockies qualifying saw the
return of some of the MRA’s fastest racers.
Ryan Burke qualified on the pole by busting into the 1:13 lap time
range. Other GTO fast qualifiers were
Mike Applegate, Dave Lambert, Dan “Otis” Turner, Sean Thomas, Mike Applehans,
Ray Thornton, and Nyles Gourlie. For
GTU, Moham was able to qualify best with James Hinton, Brian Dobrowolski, Joe
Clark, and Dennis Stowers making up the top qualifiers in GTU.
At the start of the race, GTO racer Dave Lambert shot his
Kawasaki ZX-10R out of a cannon and convincingly led the first lap only to
suffer a thrown chain as he crossed start/finish for the first time. That left Ryan Burke leading with a shadow
that would hound him for two thirds of the race in the form of Mike Applegate
on his Quik Cycles Yamaha R1M. Applegate
was all over the back of Burke almost everywhere usually separated by less than
0.1 seconds. It wasn’t until lap 10 that
Burke was able to shake off Applegate enough to open up some daylight. Those two finished 1 & 2.
Behind Burke and Applegate, Mike Applehans and Dan “Otis”
Turner had their own score to settle.
Applehans put his new All Recycling GSXR1000 in front of Turner’s NoCo Powersports
BMW S1000RR for the majority of the race until Turner was finally able to get
by Applehans for the remaining GTO podium position.
The still injured Shannon Moham took the GTU lead from
the start and settled into a pace behind GTO racer Nyles Gourlie. With a couple of laps to go, Moham got by
Gourlie to take the GTU win. Brian
Dobrowolski was running in GTU second place for much of the race while being hounded
by the liter bikes all around him, causing him no end of grief. Nonetheless, Dobrowolski held onto that
position on his Rocky Mountain Kawasaki ZX-6R until a very hard charging Jared
Dear got by with only two laps to go.
Dear spun some of the best lap times of his weekend on his Quik Cycles
Kawasaki ZX-6R to claim second on the GTU podium with Dobrowolski finishing
third. For Dear and Applehans, these
were their best Race of the Rockies finishes ever!
Finally, some inspired riding was done by three racers
this weekend to set new class records.
Cameron Lee set the 350 Production Cup qualifying record with a 1:28.436
and the 350 Cup race record with a 1:27.726.
Jon Glaefke set the Colorado Class record with a 1:20.245 and Dennis
Stowers claimed the Modern Vintage GTU record with a 1:18.259.
