Ryan Burke and Shannon Moham shine at Pueblo Motorsports Park

Pueblo, CO – The Motorcycle Roadracing Association continued its 2019 championship series with round 3 being held at Pueblo Motorsports Park over the weekend of June 22-23. As is all to frequent in Pueblo, the weather played a significant factor. The MRA has decided not to run wet races at PMP due to the highly unpredictable traction in the section of track used by the drag strip as the burnout and launch area. PMP management puts a decent amount of effort into cleaning that area after the Friday night drag races and their effort resulted in good traction through there in the dry, but if that area gets wet, the grip goes right out the door.

Unfortunately, there was quite a set of rainstorms that came into the area late Saturday afternoon. The MRA officials decided to cancel the remainder of the races that day, which included Lightweight / Ultralightweight, Heavyweight and Open Endurance races, the PB Minimoto race and the Superstreet instruction & race program.

Sunday morning was cool yet clear and the track dried out quite quickly. Race of the Rockies qualifying resulted in Ryan Burke taking a commanding pole position with a 1:30.836 – over 2 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

The start of Race of the Rockies saw Mike Applehans take the lead. Applehans led Dave Lambert & Burke until Burke got by in lap 5. Then an extremely unusual event happened in lap 6. After working his way past Lambert into third, Dan “Otis” Turner lost the back end in the 180 degree right hand turn 4 and low sided, sending his NoCo BMW S1000RR down the track with him following. This brought out the red flag at just past the half way point.

The race was restarted for the 6 remaining laps with Burke taking the hole shot and subsequently the win. Applehans was holding down second until he decided to sample the runoff areas of Pueblo Motorsports Park, later saying that he went “prairie dog hunting”. Applehans then remembered he should be using asphalt instead of dirt and rejoined the race after handing Lambert second place.

In the GTU class, Shannon Moham started from the second row for both the start and the restart. As has become customary, Moham dominated the Race of the Rockies GTU class in addition to scoring another 7 race wins and 3 class track records for the weekend. Jared Dear also started well, settling into second place with James Hinton in third until the race was red flagged. On the restart, Dear got a horrible start as Ken Yee shot forward and took over second place until doing some prairie dog hunting of his own. Nick Kaplan also got a stellar restart and took over second from Yee until Dear was able to recover from his start and motor past to reclaim second at the finish. Kaplan continued to crank off some of the best lap times of his weekend and claimed his first podium appearance in Race of the Rockies GTU. Congratulations to Nick!

Quite a few new lap records were set over the weekend. In Cam Lee claimed records in 350 Production Cup Qualifying (1:48.367) and the 350 Production Cup race (1:48.520), Chris Brown bested the Amateur GTO record with a 1:33.902, Jon Glaefke beat the Formula Colorado record with a 1:40.200, Tyler Valentine set the bar for Supertwins GTU at 1:39.537, Jason Madama bested the Lightweight GP record with a 1:37.334, Ryan Burke took Formula 40 GTO to 1:30.823, and Shannon Moham took the records in Formula 40 GTU (1:33.657), Heavyweight Superbike (1:33.521), and Middleweight Endurance (1:33.854)

Ryan Burke is supported by Dan Burke and the entire Burke family, Dunlop Motorcycle Tires/Race Tire Services, Ben Fox & Fox Performance Engines, Vickery Motorsports, Yamaha Champions Rider School, Superbike Unlimited, Love Tapped by Jenny, Brighton Radiator & Muffler.

Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, Vortex racing, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, CP Carrillo, Ninjatech, Bell Helmets, and Rocky Mountain Photo – Jim Browning.

Round 4 of the MRA series goes back to High Plains Raceway on July 13-14. This round uses the full course and features the annual 4-hour endurance race on Saturday. There will be no Superstreet program that weekend.

The Motorcycle Roadracing Association is dedicated to promoting safe and competitive motorcycle road racing events for enthusiasts in Colorado and the surrounding area. For more information go to http://www.mra-racing.org/.
