MRA’s 2015 opener succumbs to the weather
Denver, CO – The recent round of severe weather across Colorado took its toll on the MRA event over the weekend of May 9-10. Leading up to the races, High Plains Raceway had become so saturated with almost a full week of rain that there was no place for any extra precipitation to go. During Friday night and early Saturday, the MRA racers & their families experienced torrential rain, intermittent hail, and only brief respites of light sprinkles.
Saturday morning the MRA board dispatched Shannon Moham, Jim Brewer, and Rob Christman for a couple of track sessions to assess the conditions. All three riders agreed that the combination of sporadic downpours, shifting inundated sections, and frequent lightning strikes nearby posed too much of a hazard to start Saturday’s event. There was also a forecast of significant snowfall predicted for Sunday. Given all of the data, the MRA board decided to cancel the event. President Jim Wilson called the racers together at 11:30 am to announce the decision. Although disappointed, the vast majority agreed with the decision and supported Jim’s message.
Round 1 will not be made up since scheduling a new round at this point isn’t possible. Round 2 will be held as scheduled on May 30-31 at HPR and will include the MRA’s annual 4 hour endurance race in place of the usual MRA SuperStreet program.
