TORONTO, Ont. (May 14) Top Canadian racer Andrew Nelson will compete on board a BMW S 1000 RR in this year’s Parts Canada Superbike Championship. The resident of Kars, Ont., near Ottawa, will receive primary sponsorship from Orion Motorsports, the agent for the series’ spec tire supplier Pirelli, and BMW Motorrad Canada. Nelson is coming off his best year in the Parts Canada Superbike Championship feature class. The 24-year-old placed fourth in the 2009 series point standings and earned a career high third place finish at Circuit ICAR in Mirabel, Que. “We’re getting a late start to it,” admitted Nelson, who is due to debut his new bike at the second round of the RACE SuperSeries at Shannonville Motorsport Park this weekend (May 15-16). “It’s only two and a half weeks before the Nationals start and a few days before the regional at Shannonville. We’re going to start small and build things up from there.” The Parts Canada Superbike Championship kicks off at Circuit ICAR May 28-30. Nelson, the 2001 HJC Pro Rookie of the Year, will compete in all remaining rounds of the RACE SuperSeries in addition to his national series commitments. His crew will be led by noted Canadian tuner Jamie Bruines and his Propulsion Racing outfit from Sherbrooke, Que. Nelson will also carry the TSN on-board camera at all rounds of the 2010 series. “I think it will be great exposure and we’ll be able to showcase some great racing,” Nelson said. “But I think we’re going to need the camera pointing behind me, because I hope to have clear track in front of me all season!” This is the fourth BMW S 1000 RR entry for this year’s Parts Canada Superbike Championship. In addition to Nelson, bikes will be in the hands of BMW Motorrad Canada works team riders Francis Martin of Sherbrooke, Que. and Mississauga, Ont.’s Michael Ferreira, along with privateer Steve Walker of Carleton Place, Ont. “BMW Motorrad Canada is very pleased to see Andrew put together a program that will get him on the new BMW S 1000 RR for the 2010 season,” said Chris Duff, manager, Motorrad marketing at BMW Motorrad Canada. “This will give BMW four Superbikes on the grid in our first year of competing in the Superbike class in Canada which is outstanding. “Andrew has the talent to run with our Rush HD factory team riders and to win races so 2010 is going to be a very exciting season to watch.” Further sponsorship for Nelson’s program will come from Calabogie Motorsports Park, Spyke leathers, Quinte Furniture Service, Hindle Exhaust, Ohlins and Acceleration Racing. Nelson is planning to arrange individual title sponsorship for each round of the Parts Canada Superbike Championship.
